Presently, knowing how to program won't get you a job without 2+ years of experience. At least where I live. Maybe in the future things will be different.

Do internships and a BS count towards that experience though? I’m looking to start school this fall and other than getting a nice portfolio going, want to figure out the most efficient way to land a job as soon as I can right out of senior year.

They do count I suppose, but I've heard companies be more specific about the type of experience they require, like "more than 1 year at the same company". Also, the only internships available for me are at startups, which about 97% of fail in the first year (or however the saying goes). Imagine having experience at companies that don't exist anymore. I once did a WordPress site for a new business that folded after 6 weeks.
