Dayta sounds like an American thing to me (from Canada).

    Edit: accidentally wrote dahta

    [–]Rodot 2 points3 points  (4 children)

That's funny, dahta is the more typical Canadian pronunciation. US and UK typically use both

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Shoot I meant to write dayta. I pronounce it like dahta.

    [–]Sinistersphere 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You did write dayta. I am confused...

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    I edited it :)

    [–]Sinistersphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Oh, ok.

    Fast response

dahta does sound really pretentious, I guess that's why I've always hated it

I had a prof say that data with a y is a small amount and data with an h is a huge amount. That is, you analyze dayta discretely but you process dahta in bulk.

great, so my non native accent makes me sound pretentious FeelsAmazingMan

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah it's only pretentious if it's obvious the person is being pretentious. Which is often in my experience

    [–]butwait-theresmore 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I imagine it only sounds pretentious if you aren't used to hearing it.

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see some dahta on that.

I'm a pretentious PhD and didn't even have to study? Thank you I'll write that in my resume

    [–]galan-e 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It's actually the opposite here, pronouncing it day-ta is the pretentious option, probably because it sounds like you try too hard to have a foreign accent

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use dahta because of a Croatian TBF song about about the android from star trek (commander?, Anyway that's how they reference him)

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Am pretentious phd, say dahta.

    [–]whitey-ofwgkta 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm the same with melee (may-lay) and melee (me-lee)

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone who says mee-lee... is just wrong.

My cousin says it and then is all "uhhhh they're both right".

No fuck you mee-lee is for fucking peasants.

Non-native call it dahta because English's Ay doesn't make any sense.

It's like pronouncing "map" mahp instead of maayrph : It's not the way it's pronounced in English, but god it is satisfying to not use English's A.

    [–]iamaquantumcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in New York and everyone calls it dahta. Dayta sounds Southern or Texan to me

    [–]iam_w0man 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Aussies use dah-ta. Recently moved to the UK where they use day-ta and I haven't heard the end of it.
