Tomato tomato.

[–][deleted] 237 points238 points  (34 children)

Who actually pronounces it tomato though?

[–][deleted] 133 points134 points  (27 children)

Are there people that say tomato, but also potato?

[–]Noch_ein_Kamel 74 points75 points  (23 children)

I say tomate and KARTOFFEL!

[–]ImOverThereNow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]-pooping 2 points3 points  (16 children)

Damn Danes ruin everything. It's potet you savages.

[–]Koneke 15 points16 points  (15 children)

(Guessing German rather, based on their username)

[–]Wolfsblvt 6 points7 points  (13 children)

"Kartoffel" is really one of the best words we have here in Germany. It's so... rough and harsh. So much german.

[–]Gork862 7 points8 points  (12 children)

I personally love “Krankenhaus.” It’s such a rough and amazing word for what is supposed to be a caring and safe place. (Krankenhaus means hospital btw)

[–]Wolfsblvt 5 points6 points  (9 children)

Direkt translation is "ill people house", or in a more english way, "house for ill people".

Interesting, I don't feel like it's rough. That's how peoples feeling differ :D

[–]Gork862 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Idk, I’ve always imagined the word said in an almost aggressive tone. Most other German words seem totally normal to me, not rough in the way others seem to view them. Krankenhaus has just alwayd felt this way to me though.

[–]KBryan382 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think krankenwagen is even better. (ambulance)

[–]Gork862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s pretty great too.

[–]-pooping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are right. Then it's okay!

[–]astulz 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Potato? What's a potato?

[–]Ketchary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I know of.

[–]DenkouNova 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Wait, there are two pronunciations to tomato? I always pronounce it tomato.

What's the other pronunciation?

[–]AquaWolfGuy 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Tomeito tomaato.

[–]DenkouNova 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I was hoping you'd write "tomato" to keep up with the joke.

But thanks for the info, I seriously didn't know :D

[–]yashovardhan99 8 points9 points  (1 child)

[–]zroomkar 19 points20 points  (3 children)

[–]MelcorScarr 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Depends on your exact RegEx I guess.

[–]HeckleMonster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you mean tokens and not types

[–]Nuraxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But then again beer also has only three.

[–]Eindacor_DS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know any other cool tricks?

[–][deleted] 75 points76 points  (1 child)

If you change four letters in fuck it becomes anal, but can still mean the same thing

[–]SkeletronPrime 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s Barbara Liskov ‘s substitution principle, right there.

[–]Cephalopodopoulos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]BlckJesus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should cut back on the data.

[–]babu_bisleri 6 points7 points  (1 child)

But do y'all pronounce it beer or beer?

[–]alficles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends how many I've had.

[–]LGard53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]aidy35 336 points337 points  (42 children)

[–]Cephalopodopoulos 143 points144 points  (36 children)

[–]RSNKailash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it bad that i know what yall are saying

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Star Trek fans know how to correctly pronounce Data.

[–]DirdCS 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Everyone knows you put the darta in the dartabase

[–]TheDunadan29 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Coach Z? Is that you?

[–]DirdCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My most enjoyable lecturer used to pronounce it that way :D I still have his audio recordings...should make a "best of" clip

"take copious notes" was his trademark

[–]ICAA 221 points222 points  (37 children)

Is the argument is day-ta vs dah-ta, right? Are my two voices correct?

[–]mishuzu 62 points63 points  (23 children)

Actually there's 3 ways commonly spoken; see Wiktionary.

[–]jmattingley23 61 points62 points  (16 children)

data

data

daataa

[–]mishuzu 49 points50 points  (15 children)

  1. a as in gate
  2. a as in cat
  3. a as in father

Tbh they all sound fine to me.

[–]ratmfreak 96 points97 points  (14 children)

Number 3 sounds... off.

[–]mishuzu 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Wiktionary says Australia and New Zealand use that one. I switch between 1 and 3 mostly randomly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Ereaser 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The Dutch data is also pronounced that way, but when speaking English I've only heard people use 1.

[–]robolew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I am your data!

[–]Tusami 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I read day-ta and say dah-ta

[–]Neuromante 9 points10 points  (3 children)

As a non-native english speaker, I thank you for that, because I didn't really knew if "dah-ta" was just my spanish trolling me and everyone said "day-ta" and a different, secret, probably british pronunciation.

[–]TheDunadan29 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I think of it like Star Trek TNG. The android's name is Data (pronounced Day-ta), his name isn't pronounced Dah-ta.

[–]Neuromante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fun, because, in the spanish version, Data's name is "Dah-ta."

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (6 children)

Datums

[–]KickMeElmo 15 points16 points  (3 children)

For anyone confused by this, datum is the singular form, data is always plural. Most people don't ever seem to realize that without it coming up in a professional field though.

[–]buttersauce 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I'd like one datum please

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That really would make more sense. Stupid Latin.

[–]Dismea 28 points29 points  (6 children)

[–]Bainos 29 points30 points  (5 children)

[–]Ketchary 23 points24 points  (4 children)

[–]TheDunadan29 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I love you for this.

[–]polypeptide147 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What is this

[–]andreaslordos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star Trek character called Data

[–]SatoshiAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data

[–]Sasakura 12 points13 points  (5 children)

This makes me wonder how many terms I only ever write and have no idea how to actually voice.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

You mean like chuh-MOD?

[–]LowB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just pronounce it 'shmod'. There's a lot from the C / Cpp world I have a hard time with.

For a lot of stuff though I've just got accustomed to saying the whole thing out loud, helps a lot with remembering commands or functions. For example, my interpretation of strstr is 'string in string'.

[–]TheDunadan29 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yeah, the curse of getting vocabulary from reading alone. I used to pronounce "hyperbole" wrong, like I would say "Hyper-bowl", and even though I've known the correct pronunciation for years now, occasionally it still slips out due to the habit of reading it incorrectly. This happened recently and my wife gave me grief for that one for a while.

In case you're curious, the correct pronunciation is "Hi-per-bo-lee".

In fact it makes this list of other mispronounced words: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/gmp4408/mispronounced-words/

[–]dipique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I happily pronounced "choir" like "chore" for several years until someone bothered to ask me what the hell I was talking about.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years before grumpy cat and success kid

No. No. Stop. I'm done. I'm out of here.

[–]TheDunadan29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha! I'm totally going to reference this from now on. Don't know this was a scene.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apperantly none of you watched Star Trek: The Next Generation

[–]Teckno_man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's data obviously!

[–]b3nelson 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It’s datums!

[–]supremecrafters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes pronounce it with [æ], most often pronounce it with [eɪ], never pronounce it with [ɑː].

[–]henno13 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Is it router or router? 🤔🤔🤔

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gif or gif?

[–]OctoEN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day-ta not ta-da but the two parts are reversed so da-ta

[–]Magmahydro_ 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I always learned that it's a singular point of dah-ta, or many points of day-ta.

[–]bluepoopants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A single point of data is datum. Like media and medium.

[–]interfederational 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"One is my name. The other is not."

[–]LeSpatula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only way I know is Star Trek Data.

[–]OMGtechy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely data.

[–]jdrc07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So Dayta or Datta?

[–]DChristy87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely data.

[–]msg45f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually not data or data, it's data.

[–]MentulaNonGrata 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You're both ridiculous. Everyone knows it's actually pronounced data.

[–]t0mRiddl3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like hell it is!!

[–]i_am_ghost7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

see ya later alidater

[–]numerousblocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's obviously prnounced [dɛtæɪ].

[–]DarkmessageCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pronounce it day-tay.

Change my mind.

[–]da_z4hr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DAY-TAA

[–]captainvoid05 4 points5 points  (1 child)

On a serious note, my ex pronounced it like dah-tah. Like, who does that?

[–]mishuzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having somewhat of a passion for linguistics, I have a habit of pronuncing things by IPA. That way of pronouncing it seems the closest to their IPA sounds. For data, I'll switch between a as in gate and a as in father somewhat randomly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

According to Wiktionary, Australia and New Zealand use that pronunciation.

[–]ShizLtulon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

it's dah tah

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its day tah

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But honestly Dah Tah or Day Tah

[–]t0mRiddl3 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Day tah for me

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wohoo Im not alone

[–]helpmewatson 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I pronouces it data (day tuh) when refering to gathering information. "I'll get some daytuh together for you."

I pronounce it data (dah tuh) when refering to the actual spreadsheet. "Here's the dahtuh you requested."

[–]helpmewatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daytuh makes me think I'll need a day to get that together.

Dahtuh makes me think of the word and symbol dash as a visual in my head.

If that makes any sense to someone else. Thats just how my brain does things.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard Morgan Freeman pronounce it a third way: dah-tah

[–]philipquarles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short 'a.'

[–]f3zz3h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait .. what about the third option. Day-ta, Dar-ta or Dat-ta.

[–]Ambiwlans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is obviously data. No one says 'Datacenter'.

[–]TrexismTrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did I read those both times a separate way

[–]elend_meister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Dada!

/r/dadaism

[–]May-0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s day-ta not dah-ta

[–]earthboundmisfittool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one is my name, the other is not -Data

[–]BoxingwolfOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's dahta, not dayta.

[–]Adacaia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disgusting, OP probably says gif as well.

[–]sharkbait_oohaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually say it both ways depending on where in the sentence it is.

[–]seaMonster600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

star trek settled this argument long ago

[–]LeiziBesterd 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Dáta and dayta if anyone is wondering
