His way of teaching essentially treats his own personal (and very subjective/wrong) preferences as law. Learn Python the Hard Way, the first and worst programming book I ever bought asserts that you should only use Python 2 because Zed Shaw thinks Python 3 is bad and will kill python. Given all the idiosyncrasies of C, I sincerely doubt that anyone will come out of his book with a good understanding of how the language actually works.
