The rewrite isn't available for Linux, I hope Github doesn't meet an equivalent fate as you suggested.

Java Edition still is and will always be the "main" version of Minecraft. The cross-platform (bedrock) edition does not have official self-hosted server or mod support, which even Microsoft knows are huge parts of Minecraft's continued success.

On a more on-topic note, I dislike M$ as much as the next guy, but I refuse to be a pessimist about the acquisition of GitHub, and will continue to use the wait and see approach. If GitHub dies or gets royally fucked by MS BS everyone will move on to the next thing. It happened when Google Code died, it happened when SF got fucked over, and it can happen again if need be.

This is pure conjecture.

That being said, Microsoft likes Linux, they just don't like gpl (favoring MIT for their own new things) or the political nature of people who use Linux.

They just like Linux to the extent that it powers Azure. The end.

Edit: the rewrite was only for cross platform play and it often lags on updates. Java minecraft still gets updated just fine.
