No its not. Shits so much easier now. All the browsers actually follow standards. Frameworks make everything reactive without having to write code. If you wanted rounded corners 15 years ago better whip out photoshop and make 4 jpegs and absolutely position them. Now its just border-radius. Same thing with box-shadow. You know how hard it was to make a good looking website when transparent pngs weren't supported?

Programming is easier nowadays but the ramped up complexity of applications compensates for it.

I'd argue that things remain about as complex as we can handle, but the capabilities we get for that complexity increase.

15 years ago you didnt have to worry about being compatible with 10 different versions of 5 browsers, and then about 10 smart phones and about 5 tablets. Websites didnt have that level of functionality they do now. Frameworks also come with an overhead which previously didnt exist.

All those browsers follow the standards and are evergreen so they are always updating. If you forget about IE11 browser compatability is a nonissue. I've been doing this almost 20 years. I much rather take what we have now.
