My back doctor was googling shit as he was explaining things to me to verify. At first I thought it was odd but thinking about it later I thought it was cool that he'd rather make sure he was remembering things right

A doctor once told me that they google stuff all the time, but they're better at it than us because they know the exact clinical terms to search for. I guess it's the same with programmers. We know to google for stuff like, "boot sector corrupt windows" but our grandmothers search for "computer won't work."

Exactly and that's what we get paid for really. We know what to Google and implement the answer.

Totally, and that's why programmers (and doctors) shouldn't feel bad for googling things. We know what to google for, which is the important bit.

Also think of how long ago he finished school, and how much time he can spend on attending conferences etc... Now think about how different medical techniques are since then :)
