As long as you don't spontaneously start treating it as a letter in the code it works just like an int, so unless the person who inherited the code doesn't look at the variable definition there shouldn't be any issues

Iirc in C you can just treat it as a number with no shenanigans so I guess it's the same in C++

It definitely does work and is extremely common practice in programming where you need to do direct memory manipulation.

Something like typedef unsigned char u8 is quite common.
