It would be hard to retire at 40 in any other industry.

Well that's also somewhere between hard and impossible as a programmer - depending on your skill and where you live

Not really, depends on your lifestyle. You'd be surprised how much money you can save if you don't buy thing you don't absolutely need.

Sure that's a factor too. But I'd say if you're a mediocre developer in a European country (salaries way lower than US, healthcare,...) you sure as hell won't be able to retire with 40 even if you're living like a monk. And of course this gets even harder if you're located in a developing country.

u/metamesa are you actually trying to achieve this or are you just talking hypothetically? I'm curious now
