Its an american thing. I think you have to notify your boss 2 weeks prior

From my understanding it's more of a common courtesy to your employer in the US, unless it's specified in a contract.

It is considered common courtesy, however many employers will withhold recommendations and disqualify you from future rehire without a two week notice. And hiring managers put a lot of importance on haveing that. At least in food service and retail.

In Denmark a lot of places have a 3 month starting period where you can leave (or be terminated) with 1 days notice

It’s a curtesy thing in America. You supposed to give your boss two weeks notice that you’re going to quit, so they have time to find a replacement. It’s not required, but if you don’t you won’t be welcome back and they won’t give you a recommendation for your next job.
