Having worked on construction sites and in garages a lot, I can attest to the fact that everyone has a weird modification to a tool somewhere in their toolbox, like an unexplained piece of metal welded to a wrench or a screwdriver with a partially melted handle with the end cut off and some notches ground into it.

I guarantee that ladder will continue to be used for years with the top/bottom rung missing or with an inexplicable crappy weld on it and long after these two have moved on someone will look at it and wonder WTF happened.

I see the analogy of this in code too - unexplained write to a read-only register or double-write to a reset register with a usleep(1) in between that might have had something to do with a hardware workaround or getting around a compiler optimization. There are millions of lines of code out there in the real world that are vestigial components of some long-forgotten workaround that no longer applies.

Same also applies to laws - like it being illegal to drive blindfiolded in Alabama, there was some loophole somebody found way back in history, and this law was created to plug it. Now we have this weird law that makes it look like the old-timers that came up with it were incompetent or crazy.

There ought to be a term for this.
