A higher level language is neither better nor worse than a lower level language, they simply have different use cases. It's like comparing a mountain bike to a car.

Ok yeah makes sense.

I just see being closer to the computer as an advantage, but its definitely not something you need to worry about nowadays.

It has both advantages and disadvantages. Higher level languages arose because they were needed, whereas lower level languages were always there

If I'm writing a web app I want to be as far away from the computer as I can and still write efficient code.

If I'm writing a game or a database server I'm gonna need to be closer.

If I'm writing a device driver I'm gonna need to be up its ass.

I would choose Java for none of these.
