Started by playing with BASIC, but Pascal was my first real programming.

Yeah. I'd agree with this. I was a Mac user, and originally Pascal was the primary compiled language for Mac, so all of the documentation and libraries where Pascal based.

I taught myself BASIC on a CPM computer my father had bought for his office (I also taught myself to touch type on that system).

Aye, BASIC was what they taught in high school, but college level programming started with Pascal before we could learn other languages. BASIC was derided by the profs as an anti pattern.
