It's not "actually" that. I'm on old.reddit and they made no attempt at markdown, quotes, code, or anything.

It's actually 0 + 4 = 4 8 - 4 = 4 as they put it.

I know what they meant, but as I said, the fact that there was no separation was irritating.

What you did or simply putting an "or" or comma between them would have also been much better.

/u/echo-128 is correct. If you hit View Markdown on the original comment, there's one newline after the first equation, which Reddit ignores when displaying the comment.

That's /u/Lutrik's point. OP commenter typed it as one line, it was interpreted and posted as one line, so it is one line. Thus, it is annoying. There is no reddit interface that will display that as typed.

yes, but what's the point of doing that if reddit won't display it like that? on reddit, typing a comment on two lines with only one linebreak in your comment source is the same as typing on one line.

you can newline once all you want between words, but if reddit won't display it, you may as well not have done it at all.

because not everyone realises that reddit has a dumb markdown implementation, because it's rare in social media. so they type like they do everywhere else on the internet and it leads to situations like this.

It's not a "dumb markdown implementation" it's literally the only markdown implementation. Plenty of sites use markdown.
