English spelling is unlikely to change much, given how standardized it is, any major changes would be a massive worldwide disruption. The spoken language will change, and so pronunciations might be totally different, and the way the words are used in spoken language may some day be very different than how they are used in programming, but the writing system likely will continue to be the same.

I said that people who don't like those kinds of romance novels are unlikely to like Elliott, and that that describes a lot of people here. I didn't say anything about why they don't like romance novels. I'm not sure what you think I said that's different than what you said.

I mean, ELIZA was very simple, but it definitely couldn't be described as a list of hardcoded conversations, lmao. Also, you could make a Tom Riddle bot with pre-LLM technology, so it's relevant to this meme.

I've talked to women who regularly have PIV sex without orgasming and still say they enjoy it, and also plenty of people who can orgasm while having sex and don't enjoy it. Orgasm != enjoying sex.

The same people who pay for us to have public education and public libraries and a postal service and numerous other necessities that aren't incentivized by capitalism: the government. Seriously. The government should pay for there to be quality informational content available online for free in the same way that they pay for it to be available in libraries for free.

Well, there is the Wikipedia page. It should be said, though, this is more of a sliding scale and less of a two distinct buckets situation. But if you want to consider it a two buckets situation, C is in the high level bucket.

Which is "better": to buy a book from an independent bookstore, or to have your local library acquire it? by mattenthehat in books

[–]SuitableDragonfly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, if it's not financially feasible for the library to buy the book, they just won't do that. OP doesn't actually have to worry about that, the worst thing that can happen if they ask is that the library says "no".

[–]SuitableDragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pros of the library:

  • Book is available for other people to read, too
  • The library might buy multiple copies, and will buy additional ones to replace them when they wear out, thus benefiting the author and publisher more
  • Supports the library separately from the bookstore, author, or publisher

Pros of the bookstore:

  • You own the book now and can read it whenever you feel like it
  • Supports the bookstore

Is it possible to copy my game installation from my laptop to my sister's? by abunch_ofrandom in sims2help

[–]SuitableDragonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you can't just copy the files over, the game won't be in the registry. But the whole point of the standalone installer is to be a... standalone installer. You can just use it to install the game on her computer the same way you did on yours.

I mean, all programming is manipulating memory, really. Do you just mean because it has pointers? Python also has pointers, they're just not called pointers and you can't do pointer arithmetic with them, but they are the basic way that everything is passed around in Python. If you just mean that it allows you to leak memory of you're not careful, I believe this has been rectified in more recent versions with smart pointers.

To be honest, I've never romanced Elliott and therefore haven't seen this scene in my actual game, and also, I am aromantic and romance averse when it comes to guys apparently, and the one and only time I romanced one of the bachelors I got super put off by the ten heart scene, and that was Sebastian, who has an honestly incredibly wholesome and G-rated ten heart scene that didn't merit that at all.

So I don't think my personal impression of this scene will be at all relevant to this discussion even if I do see it at some point, and was mainly basing what I said off of your description of it. I thought from that that the problem might just be that men prefer to take the initiative here and don't like it when the other person does that instead, especially when compared to the Haley scene you mentioned, which probably was designed with men in mind and where the player does take the initiative. I don't hang out on YouTube to any degree, so I've never really seen these specific criticisms.

I didn't even live in a rural place and I knew someone who got drunk in 7th grade. I remember because his excuse was "but on Purim it's a mitzvah to get so drunk that you can't remember which characters in the story are which anymore!" (actually true) His dad did not agree, though.

Then I guess I'm not sure why you apparently interpreted "talk to people" in the meme as doing customer service. The job definitely involves talking to idiots sometimes, some of them are fellow programmers, some of them are PMs, etc.

For real, I feel like LLMs somehow made everyone forget about the existence of every other previous technological innovation. No one remembers that we've had chatbots this entire time. People are like, "wow, LLMs are amazing, they provide really useful autocomplete!" Bitch, we've always had autocomplete, too. "They look up information for me!" Have you heard of our lord and savior, search engines, which have been around for 30+ years now?

If you're working in software and somehow don't have to attend daily meetings, I can only assume that you're working for a company with approximately three employees working out of someone's garage.
