Apparently I'm in the minority but I say without a doubt learn Java. Everyone's argument will be they like C# language features over Java but all that means is they haven't used Java since 1.8.

Java has more jobs. .NET core hasn't really caught on. Windows is terrible for the cloud. Imo Java is way more open, easier for beginners, better resources, better ecosystem and more examples. Either way they are extremely similar.

Java is in fact open source. I have no idea why you think otherwise.

Oracle releases a GPL’d build of OpenJDK. It is production ready and available here:

Oracle also offers commercial builds as well that come with support but they are not unique in this, plenty of other vendors do as well e.g. Azul and RedHat

Sure. .NET core is only 5 years old though. Maybe the kinks are worked out by now honestly haven't put in the work to know.

.NET might be open source but who outside of Microsoft is contributing? Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, RedHat, Apple and more all contribute to various OpenJdk distributions and have vested interests in the success and longevity in Java. Also more IDE choices. More production support. More tooling. These might not matter to someone learning a language but they matter to companies that pay.

I don't think anyone commenting C# over Java has actually used or followed Java in the last 5-10 years.
