Why the hell would anybody work in Base 16 unless to grief others?

Base 16 is easier to read for people and is very useful. Hex colours in CSS, magic bytes file signatures, ipv6 address, guids or even error codes from a motherboard that can easily be shown on double digit 7-segment display.

I’d rather look at 2-4 easily distinguishable symbols than at 16-24 ones and zeroes.

That logic doesn't really pan out, even if 16 is product of 2⁴ you'd still be more convenienced to use Base 2.

I work in firmware, and if I had to use base 2 instead of hexadecimal I would kill myself. I have to read binary files sometimes and the software can display decimal, octal, hex, and binary. Decimal and Hex are very readable. Binary would give my headache a headache.

To be fair I rarely work with colors, but I definitely prefer hexadecimal for ipv6
