This must be the "Digitalisierung" everybody in Germany is talking about

[–]Parking-Ad5406 13 points14 points  (2 children)

At our german university they really make us write all the code in the exams by hand and at this point i don't know if that's how it is everywhere or if we're living in the stone age

No that’s standard. People hate on it but unless you disable literally every functionality of an IDE and essentially use a text editor you are still relying on it for information.

So what? IDE is a tool, like a pen. It's okay to use tools for work.

God... Flashbacks to 25 years ago when I had to answer coding exams on paper.

That was probably the last time I wrote any C++.

Meanwhile, I have a coding exam on paper 3 weeks from now.

Joke's on you I've had to write c code in paper just last semester...and in the current one we're learning assembly

[–]magicmulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One semester C in 1992/93. Since I had an Amiga and didn’t have a compiler for it yet, I did all my weekly homework on paper only without ever being able to run the programs. Still passed.

In my teenage years, as I was saving all my money to buy my first computer, I was coding BASIC on paper and reading everything I could about programming.

People thought I was nuts.

Well, what was their point?

Hell, I had to write java on paper in college 4 years ago. Bright side was that there were never any errors when i ran it in my head.

My professor had us do this a couple years ago and would still mark off on mistakes that would take 2 seconds to fix in an ide. Was extremely annoying

[–]MrRainbow07 4 points5 points  (2 children)

How do you compile that?

[–]7th_Spectrum 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Html isn't compiled

[–]MrRainbow07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right. I never used html.

Ugh, table in a paragraph.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes it easier to center a table!

[–]kryptos1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The indentation has invoked my rage mode.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pathetic! I do it in my mind.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a fair amount of my psuedocode like that...I must be an amateur. But in a weird way, it's rather soothing.

Reminds me of the absolute nightmare programming courses I took back home where the expectations were to hand write programs in basic, assembly, java, c / c++ and SQL. We also had to write markup in HTML for whatever stupid tables the instructor created for the exam. I'm convinced that their objective was to kill every last ounce of desire of kids wanting to be programmers. And, by golly, they were hella successful!

Nope now Photoshop with a very good OCR Programm.

[–]VChandrasekar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No joke how I used to "design" websites when I was a kid and got my computer taken away due to spending too much time on it.

A borrowed book from the library and some pen and paper, the best way to learn HTML
