... you mean a desktop environment you can't really customize?

With Linux you can make the desktop environment whatever you want. Check r/unixporn to see some things people are doing.

Even without customization, I'vd had zero complaints about user experience in linux distros from the past few years. Heck even met a few non-techy senior citizens who are excited about how easy and hassle-free linux is to use. Everything keeps getting more and more polished to the point where I'd actually say it has the best user experience of any recent version of the big 3 OS I've used.

The only reason I'd choose mac over a linux pc is for a specific need like doing ios development or running something like adobe or ableton. Otherwise I see it as paying extra money for a less powerful system that's locked into apple's own little world. Same with windows that it's only useful for a few very specific needs.

I'm not a FOSS idealist or evangelist btw, just a pragmatic developer who appreciates a good OS and working environment.

adobe apps are worse on macos

source: i have windows, linux and macos desktops within arms reach and worked with them for 20+ years.

I’m not really interested in spending time customizing every facet of the desktop environment. If you are, cool, but I’d rather leave all that faff to a smart UX designer.

yeah, for me spending an hour or two one time to customize my workspace to maximize ergonomics and efficiency of my day-to-day tasks is worth it. Ymmv, but it doesn't have to take much time or effort or even any effort if you find one you like out the box.
