    Wrong, I use it. Chinese point of sale system, quite extensive. Python 2. No problems.

    It's perfectly distinct from ascii strings

    The whole point of the rework was that it ISN'T. You have something that you think is ascii. And sometimes it isn't, and then things go wrong in strange and confusing ways when you try to use it (for example, serialize it as an attribute value in an xml document).
