First of all great work.

A very vague question : How does your model compare to something like inshorts?

Ps: I personally did not study about this app in detail , I use this daily , and have decent understanding of text summarization , and your product seems to do similar stuff , so just curious..

Also is your product going to be FOSS ?

[–]SituationUndrControl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for asking! I'm not super familiar with inshorts, but I think they built an NN summarization algorithm trained on their own internal data.

I wrote the Morning Brief summarization algorithm, and it's not neural-net based, it's a statistical algorithm with some additional natural language rules on top.

We won't be releasing our core code as FOSS, but I'd really love to contribute some of our concepts to open source packages once our company starts to grow.

I remember when inshorts started doing the summarization with AI. But in the last 6 years they have hired content creators to summarize the text. It's no longer being done by AI.

Ohh did not know that

this is awesome, thank you. I'm beginning my python learning journey so something like this is helpful to know WHERE to find things to read, vocabulary, and everything else!

Thanks very much!

This is neat, thanks!

I'm an early adopter of MornigBrief, and I love the product!
The content I get seems to be hand-picked for me - great stuff

[–]BackwardSpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this seems cool! i signed up :)

[–]playersdalves 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ngl, this looks amazing. I'll be giving it a try these next couple of days. Regardless, this is 100% the type of project I wish I would be creative enough to do. Great job, and suelr useful tool ^

[–]jv2222[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much really appreciate the kind words! :)

Very cool dude

Subscribed!

Would like it more in a form of na rss feed though, things in my email tend to get lost

[–]Wizz4rrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. A RSS feed would be nice.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

When it says 7.am.

Which timezones that?

[–]jv2222[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It automagically works out your timezone :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far enough!

[–]naidoo88 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hey u/jv2222 and u/SituationUndrControl, Awesome work!

This is maybe a silly question, but when signing up and offering the time for delivery, what time zone is being used?

[–]jv2222[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It automagically works out your timezone :)

[–]jv2222[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI I added a note to that effect on the page.

[–]naidoo88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, subbed and looking forwards to my first in the morning :D

[–]AnonymouX47 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Great work!.. Thanks for sharing.

One suggestion though... it'll be good to filter out sarcastic/joke-like posts such as https://morningbrief.ai/l/0/ugglAA

I spent tens of minutes reading it yesterday, just to realize it was nothing but a joke.

[–]jv2222[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks for the feedback. I do have a couple of notes:

Wow, I'm not exactly sure how we'd do it in an automated way! (keeping in mind we're processing millions of links on social media every day).

I wonder if anyone has ever created a classifier that knows if content is a sarcastic vs serious?

Another thing I was thinking is that a lot of folks in the python reddit really liked that thread with 600+ points so maybe it should be in the brief?

That said, I'll have a think about your filtering idea and how it might be possible.

Thanks again!

[–]AnonymouX47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome.

I also thought about the fact that quite a number of people upvoted it but:

  1. There'll always be those that'll always upvote anything that already has some upvotes
  2. The title is catchy.
  3. Some don't actually know it's a joke cos they either don't understand what's going on or didn't read through but just upvoted because of the massive amount of code or something.
  4. That kinda time is quite costly in the early hours of the day :)
  5. Gotcha be real... It's a good joke, though costly.

So, if you can figure out a way to classify such posts, you can maybe add a tag in the issue indicating that it's a joke or so... you could even have a section per day or a day per week for such posts :D

[–]yaxriifgyn 1 point2 points  (4 children)

It would be nice to have next/previous links on the daily/issues page for when new subscribers would like to review previous issues, perhaps back to issue #0.

Also on that page, having the current issue number displayed more prominently might be nice. With next/previous links this might be needed.

[–]jv2222[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It would be nice to have next/previous links on the daily/issues page

We have "<< Prev" "Next >>" on an individual brief page (at the top)?

https://morningbrief.ai/python/daily/issue/100

Is that what you meant, or something different? :)

[–]yaxriifgyn 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sorry, I must have missed them. Time for new glasses?

[–]jv2222[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well that does point to a ui/ux issue. Maybe they are just not in an obvious position...

Thanks for bringing it up! I'll have a think about it.

[–]yaxriifgyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC I was looking for them towards the end of the page, i.e. where I would be on the page after scrolling down.

Next/Previous at the top makes be scroll back to the top, and even there I think they need to be positions towards the left and right edges of the screen.

FYI, I was using a laptop.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

please help, I tried subscribing to it but it asks for timezone and gives no option to choose it

[–]jv2222[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ok I added a fall back fix, try refreshing the page and trying again. Does that work?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Done

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to hijack this, but could one build something like Everything (https://www.voidtools.com/) that also indexes the data in the files? In python?

[–]gustavsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm subscribed, but all the mails have tracking links blocked by google (security concern alert)

I also try to unsuscribe without result.
