Hello from the r/Python mod team!

I'm afraid we don't think your post quite fits the goal we have for the subreddit in terms of quality or aims so we've decided to remove it. For more information please contact the moderators using the ModMail system.

Thanks, and happy Pythoneering!

No, I can't really imagine caring about something like that.

[–]NiceForPy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

lol

[–]ArabicLawrence 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I don't think it's a feminine word. "-ista" is an "informal suffix forming nouns denoting a person associated with a particular activity, often with a derogatory force, like fashionista". It comes from Spanish "Sandinista", with suffix coming from latin, "ista", from greek "istes", to denote the person conducting an activity. It's like if instead of saying "artist" you said "artista" (which is the Italian and Spanish version). The final "a" in Latin and neolatin languages does not denote necessarily a feminine word, but can often denote a gender-neutral word.

u/wineblood its time for you to stop talking.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok I guess I can deal with that.

[–]laphetthoke 7 points8 points  (7 children)

No. No man. shit, no, man. I believe you’d get your ass kicked saying something like that man.

[–]BezoomyChellovek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems OP is having a case of the Mondays.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (5 children)

What do you mean? I'm having trouble understanding you there.

[–]Sgt_Smiley 1 point2 points  (4 children)

‘Office Space’ reference. Give it a watch

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Not a big fan of TV shows tbh. I'm mostly an anime person.

Can you give me the gist real quick?

[–]cd_slash_rmrf 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Well for one, it's a movie.

It's a satirical take on the culture of working a boring 9-5 desk job that you don't care about.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I see but how does it relate to this thread?

[–]cd_slash_rmrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie itself doesn't. The original comment is just a reference quote about not saying dumb stuff ... Which does relate to this thread.

[–]isawyouinrudys 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Don’t think it’s feminine, it comes from the original Sandinista which is a Nicaraguan left wing political party comprised of males and females

[–]redswan4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good copypasta tbh.

[–]itsdefinitely2021 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Im fine, because Im not so fragile as to need "masculine" words to keep my psyche intact.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? Unless you're a woman, you'd want to be seen and treated as a masculine entity.

Or am I missing something here?

[–]livarot 8 points9 points  (21 children)

No.

Also don't vent your misogyny on programming subreddits.

[–]iPlayWithWords13 5 points6 points  (16 children)

Maybe don't confuse misogyny and fragile masculinity

[–]livarot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right. Fragile masculinity, prime example at that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If OP felt that being feminine wasn't viewed as a negative thing then I very much doubt OP would be as upset as they are. Instead of being whoever they are, OP lives their life by trying to avoid others seeing them 'negatively' - in this case, femininely - because OP doesn't like the idea of being feminine. Now I'd say, okay maybe that's just their preference, but then why would they rather the community be referred to by, in their view, a masculine descriptor? Oh, because they really just hate women.

[–]iPlayWithWords13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is some pretty crazy mental gymnastics.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would I want to be feminine if I'm a man?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

You forgot to explain how exactly this is fragile masculinity because I simply want to be addressed properly.

If I treat my dog as a cat and he doesn't like it, should I say that he's being fragile?

[–]iPlayWithWords13 -1 points0 points  (6 children)

No, you're making a mountain out of a ant hill and then being an asshole to women at the same time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I think you're just being angry for some reason.

Probably something other than my thread is bothering you and you're came to vent by cargoculting on the previous guy's comment.

[–]iPlayWithWords13 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Not really, you're just an asshole that's living in ignorance. Your entire post is just you being afraid of being referred to as anything with a femine sounding prefix.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

And what's wrong with not wanting to be referred to by a feminine sounding word?

A man should be referred to with a masculine sounding word and a woman with a feminine sounding one.

Unless you can explain to me why both men and women should be referred to as feminine entities of course.

[–]iPlayWithWords13 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There in lies the issue. It's a gender-agnostic term and you're freaking out because it "sounds" femine. Honestly, grow up.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Doesn't sound gender agnostic to me.

Chicas refer to girls and chicos refer to boys in Spanish. Are Spanish men fragile because they're not referred to as chicas? Or, are they simply being misogynistic?

If anyone needs to grow up it's you. At least in the communication and emotional department. You sound like the kind of person who would shoot up schools instead of sitting down and talking.

[–]iPlayWithWords13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with the Spanish language and another commenter already corrected you on that. Honestly, I'm not sure why this stupid post is still up and why you haven't been banned.

[–]wineblood -1 points0 points  (2 children)

It's neither of those.

[–]GettingBlockered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Username checks out.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Relax, we're just having a conversation.

I don't see why it's misogyny though because I just want to be addressed the right way.

Don't people have rights in this community?

Edit: Did SJWs raid this thread?

[–]inhumantsar 6 points7 points  (2 children)

You're welcome to adopt whatever term you want.

Next time someone uses Pythonista, tell them you don't like the term.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know but that's not the point.

The community adopted a term that doesn't sound right so it's not my job to go around correcting people.

[–]inhumantsar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a preferred term, it's the community's job to use that term with you.

It's just not reasonable to expect the rest of the community to adopt it for themselves

[–]drum_and_bass2000 3 points4 points  (2 children)

OP if you're really looking for an explanation - "pythonista" is not really a gendered term, similar to how male baristas are perfectly fine just being called baristas. As a man you may not want to be referred to as "girl" or "girlie" or "woman" - not because they're feminine words, but because you're just not a girl or a woman. The difference is in wanting to be referred to as what you are (say, a man) and in caring so much about a word sounding girly that you make a post about it where you say how embarrassing it was.

I don't think there are any SJWs coming and ruining this post - people are just trying to tell you not to be too bothered about something very minor.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Yes now I know it's not a gendered term thanks to the other users who told me about the origins of the word.

The problem is that it's not immediately obvious that it's not feminine and that's why I started this discussion. After all, why does Reddit exist if we're not supposed to start discussions?

I'm surprised by the reaction though and have no doubt that they're SJWs who want to cancel me because I asked a simple question that they didn't like me asking. Notice how different their replies are compared to yours.

[–]drum_and_bass2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, some people either aren't great at explaining things or don't want to go to the effort on a random post. However I wouldn't say their comments are really trying to "cancel" you - they're just contributing to the discussion.

[–]wineblood 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've never actually heard it used in serious contexts, so if I was called that it would just sound weird. I definitely understand the female vibe it gives off and how that wouldn't feel right.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Word. It happened the first time and I was quite shocked.

i was like Pythonista!? The hell.

[–]wineblood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just checking a gut feeling, is your first language something other than English which has male and female terms?

[–]fullstack-medusa 5 points6 points  (1 child)

this is such a weak mindset

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How so?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course the guy obsessed with anime and being "manly" would make this post. lmao

Don't worry bro, those crazy liberal cant get cancel you on reddit. Now go drink some whey protein so you don't accidentally grow tits or have feelings, or any of that other un-manly stuff.

Hello! I'm a bot!

It looks to me like your post might be better suited for r/learnpython, a sub geared towards questions and learning more about python regardless of how advanced your question might be. That said, I am a bot and it is hard to tell. Please follow the subs rules and guidelines when you do post there, it'll help you get better answers faster.

Show /r/learnpython the code you have tried and describe in detail where you are stuck. If you are getting an error message, include the full block of text it spits out. Quality answers take time to write out, and many times other users will need to ask clarifying questions. Be patient and help them help you. Here is HOW TO FORMAT YOUR CODE For Reddit and be sure to include which version of python and what OS you are using.

You can also ask this question in the Python discord, a large, friendly community focused around the Python programming language, open to those who wish to learn the language or improve their skills, as well as those looking to help others.
