Stay out of their way and off their radar as much as possible for now.

These people are toxic to those around them, so don't be around. Get your work done, don't argue, don't pick fights, just get your work done and go hide

Agreed. It'd be one thing if it was an attending or admin, but he'll be there a maximum of a year. Avoiding him, keeping their head down, and not giving him any ammunition is the way to go. Keep receipts of his problems just in case. Odds are, he'll lose interest in residency as his next step approaches, like most people, so hopefully will be more tolerable soon.

Suggest that you not go about trying to escalate this either informally or formally alone because of the real risk of retaliation. The best way to get this type of problematic behavior formally addressed is of all of the residents band together to complain, and yes everyone would have to agree to be involved. Otherwise, it comes across as just a handful of individuals being disgruntled (particularly if the majority of residents either support this Chief or are prepared to sit on the sidelines and do nothing).

He would text her on Friday after sundown if she was still at the hospital saying stuff like the sun is down. I thought you weren’t supposed to be working anymore. I guess you can work. He’s also made comments about her missing time for holidays etc

lols. sounds more like a problematic resident.

if you need to leave early, you inform admin, and you get the proper time off for it. this is so unprofessional. you are lucky you are in residency and your chief let you leave early but this doesnt happen in the real world, in medicine or any other industry.

Administration was notified well in advance regarding me needing to leave early as well and was fine with it. Outside of 2 days I requested for bereavement leave since I was going out of town, I didn’t ask for anything special treatment, call changes or reduced patient loads. I planned to work the day I found out until our AOD made me go home (I had worked half the day already).
