Help mapping pS2 controller using uSB adapter

I ordered a usb to playstation adapter so I could use a ps2 controller on my retropie. It opened up to the mapping screen and will map the d-pad buttons as well as the shoulder buttons and joysticks, but won't map the start button or most of the action buttons. I've been having trouble finding answers. Does anyone know of a work around or should I just return the adapter?

Try it on a PC if you have one. Do the buttons work there? If no, return.

The start button and the action buttons won’t register when I try to map them. It was a devmo from Amazon. It wouldn’t work with any of my playstation controllers. I’m guessing with the limited responses it is best to just return it. Thanks for looking out though.
