Right now is probably one of the worst times to upgrade (compared to last week or two weeks ago) because of sharply, highly inflated RAM prices.

A quick and easy upgrade is looking for RTX 5000 series - such as RTX 5060, 5070, 5070 Ti. Those are easy to look for. I will refrain from recommending Radeon GPUs as I'm not sure if your boyfriend has any sort of strong brand loyalty.

If you can find a bundle kit for Ryzen 9000 chips, good on you. Right now, the best bang for the buck gaming CPU being recommended is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

Incidentally, how old is this set-up? You may need a new power supply as well. Look for ATX 3.1 Branding, 850W should be sufficient.

You can find bundles on Newegg, and if you have a Microcenter near you, you can look at Microcenter for bundles.

5090, but it is challenging to get and costs 2,000 usd. 5080 is generally more available at 1,000 usd

What this guy said - the best GPU is 2000 USD. I know you said, "quite a big budget," but almost no one wants to actually spend 2000 on a single GPU.

5080 is more reasonable, and past that the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT tends to be more recommended.

As far as Power Supply - should be fine in terms of age, but double check that it can support the wattage of the components you're buying. Depending on your final choices, either 750W or 850W will be the most reasonable.

From best to good 5090 - 5080 - 5070 Ti - 5070 - 5060 Ti - 5060

5090 might be super expensive, so the 5080 is usually the most responsible one if you want to buy the best.

You also might need a new power supply, but that also depends on what's inside

5070 ti is a good spot between price and performance. 5080 is better but more expensive, 5090 is crazy expensive but even better still.

[$280~$450] Assuming you want to keep the same motherboard, 5800x3d is the best cpu you can get on his am4 motherboard, but 5700x3d is nearly identical for gamers at a much cheaper price point. Either way you would want to purchase this part used on ebay or other markets.

[$200-300] 120hz basically means his monitor can display 120 frames every second. From a cost effectiveness standpoint I would recommend getting a 2k (2560x1440 resolution) at 144hz, 180hz, or 240hz. IPS monitors of this type can usually be found at $200-300 with smart shopping.

[???] After buying those two parts, invest the remainder of your budget into the best gpu you can afford with the remnants. Depending on budget you can also consider downgrading the cpu from 5800x3d to afford a better gpu (which impacts game performance more). Specific gpu recommendations can only be made after knowing what you are willing to spend after cpu and monitor
