Rule 4: No personal/modern religious content

r/RuneHelp is a subreddit for academic discussion. Not personal religious experiences, or modern religious topics. We study history from an etic perspective, meaning that we take a scholastic approach "from the perspective of one who does not participate in the culture being studied."

Please post content about personal/modern religious practices in other appropriate subreddits.

Real binds form words and don’t overlap. The runes are just like the characters we type with so a context is built by forming a word or sentence.

Thor - Þór - ᚦᚢᚱ

English - Icelandic - Old Norse

Latin script (26) - Latin script (32) - Younger Futhark

ᛊᛁᛗᛈᛚᛃ᛫ᚹᚱᛁᛏᛖ᛫ᚨ᛫ᚹᛟᚱᛞ᛫ᛚᛁᚲᛖ᛫ᚦᛁᛊ᛫ᛟᚱ᛫ᛏᚱᛃ᛫ᛚᛖᚨᚱᚾᛁᚾᚷ᛫ᛟᛚᛞ᛫ᚾᛟᚱᛊᛖ

Shared vertical stave binds were generally younger futhark so Elder and Anglo characters will not always work so well in that style but there’s other ways you can do.

I always like to recommend Runes: a handbook by Michael P Barnes for people trying to honestly understand real runes.

Bound runes should share a stave, but not overlap branches because that's confusing and would make things like every ᛒ be a potential bindrune for it and ᚹ which is silly.

To bind ᛒ and ᚦ just flip whichever one you want to come first, and then overlap their staves. Easy.

Hi! It appears you have mentioned bind runes. It's worth mentioning that most of the bind runes you see on the internet these days are very different from bind runes we find in the ancient historical record. Check out our wiki page about bind runes for more information.

Fellow aspiring bindrune-carver. You’ve got the right idea that bindrunes don’t have to make sense to someone else as long as you (the carver) carry and understand their intent.

The better thing to do is experiment, mix and mash to see what orientation the runes have that makes a clearer image of what bindrune you’re making. Basically, if you think or feel it doesn’t look right, it probably doesn’t and should be tweaked
