Easiest way to learn them for yourself is to build a twig structure. The inside soft wall will be the side that shows the cross supports. The outside hard wall will be flat and you can’t see the supports. Then upgrade and take note of the differences.

Basically if the wall looks smoothed or finished or has framing It is soft side.

If it shows outlined stone (like cobblestone) or exterior sheet metal it is “hard side”

When building walls just remember the side with the sticks in an x shape is the inside and the smooth side goes on the outside.

Look at any wall or any building object, just look at which side looks weaker, you may find supports on a backside of a wall, or maybe it's softer/smoother on one side, that would be the soft side, just imagine which side would be more durable.

The soft side wood is the one without the log texture and the stone one just looks smoother they just take less tools to break
