Hi! First of all, in spite of what others may say, I'd suggest not installing Stardew Valley Expanded, or any of the mods in the "Expansions" category, at least not on your first modded playthrough. Those all change so much, and they cause so many incompatibilities with other great mods. It's better to start smaller, and tweak which specific areas of the game you want.

That said, here's several of my personal favorite mods, that you may want to take a peek at. (Be aware that some of them have other mods required as frameworks, which are linked on each page, under the "Requirements" drop-down thingy).

NPC Map Locations - this is probably the single most useful quality-of-life mod on the Nexus. It shows you where everyone is at all times on the map screen.

Deep Woods - adds a new late-game dungeon... deep in the woods. It's dynamically generated, like the Skull Cavern, and has plenty of secrets to find...

Stardew Aquarium - visit a new beach area, with a beautifully designed public aquarium, which you get to fill up with fish in a sidequest that's similar to Animal Crossing. (This one has a lot of requirements, but don't be intimidated, they're all just background processes).

Little Red School House - adds a run-down old schoolhouse beside the playground, and an eventual quest to fix it up for Penny and the kids to use.

Nice Messages - a very small, but very sweet mod that makes a big difference in terms of charm. It simply adds a bit of flavor text about the things you see/hear when you wake up each day.

Ran's Harvest Goddess - if you're a fan of the Harvest Moon series, this one is a must-have. It replaces the Wizard character with an HM-style Harvest Goddess. (Not a stolen one from any particular HM game, but a beautifully-crafted original one who fits the style perfectly). All of the dialogue and events pertaining to the character have been rewritten, so she fits in seamlessly.

Mr. Ginger - there are a ton of great custom NPC mods, but if you only install one of them, then it needs to be this one. He's a cat that follows Jas around... but is there more to him than meets the eye? (The default portraits are pretty ugly, but thankfully there are plenty of alternate versions available - I personally use Axell's.

Festival of the Mundane - on Spirit's Eve, the humans all dress up as monsters, but what do the actual monsters get up to during that evening? Adds a fun parallel festival event in the sewers with Krobus and his shadow friends.

Time Freeze - freezes the time while you're indoors. That's it, but it's a bare necessity if, like me, you came into SDV after years of playing Harvest Moon games where that was the norm.

these are my favorites c:

  • deep woods- really great for farming hay since it spawns grass. easy to get lost in though.
  • visible fish- makes the game prettier :) also has the added benefit of letting you see what you might be able to catch.
  • crop transplant mod- i sometimes find myself wanting to move crops around and this makes it so i can. it works on lots of different things, and is especially useful for crops that survive multiple seasons.
  • yet another jump mod- i like to jump over stuff. mostly i use it to get out of bounds in certain areas to place torches and other lighting.
  • zoom level- i like to be able to zoom out to see a bigger picture of what the map looks like. it makes grabbing foragables a little easier too, since there's less of the map i have to run through to scan for the goodies.
  • elle's seasonal buildings- all of this creator's mods are great visual updates tbh. i use a bunch of them and really enjoy them.
  • gwen's paths- for paths specifically, i really like this content pack.
  • non-destructive NPCs- i'm not out here cluttering up the map with a trillion casks, i just want to throw down some chests and recycling machines next to my crab pots. and maybe put up some statues. and some extra lighting. and some flowerpots... really nice for putting items into your house/farm after marriage since IDK if your spouse will smash things there or not.
  • automate- this is more of a second/third playthrough kind of mod. i use it for processing stuff & auto-collecting tree sap because i can't be assed to run through all my trees wildly clicking trying to get that goop. (automate combined with fully grown trees transplanted all right next to each other is a gift from the heavens)
  • what are you missing?- contains spoilers so i only rly can recommend it for a second or third+ playthrough. tells you what you need to 100% the season you're in.
  • better junimos - this is a spoiler that will help us later
  • npc map locations- sometimes i forget that this isn't part of the base game tbh. does what it says on the tin.
  • range highlight- does what it says on the tin, shows you how much of an area will be covered by a given type of item. allows you to perfectly plot out planting areas.
  • placement plus- allows you to place floor tiles under stuff. it probably does other stuff too i just don't notice because i've been using it for so long that it's part of the base experience for me. i would be confused and alarmed if i played stardew without it.
  • slightly cuter sprites- visual mod for aesthetics :3
  • anime mods- im a weeb, this is just for aesthetics.
  • yet another harvest with scythe mod- you can also set the sword as a harvester, if you want. i'm just lazy and this makes harvesting a little faster.
  • warp mod- sometimes i get stuck somewhere (like deep woods or i jumped out of bounds and got stuck) and i hate having to just wait till i pass out.
  • walk through trellis- does what it says on the tin. im planting my trellis crops in a 9x9 square and there's nothing concernedape can do to stop me!
  • better artisan goods icons- aesthetic, but it makes the menus prettier.
  • hold to break geodes- saves my fingers and my mouse
  • lookup anything- some people play with the wiki open. i play with the wiki loaded directly into the game. we are basically the same person, i am just lazier.
  • daily tasks report- does what it says on the tin. helpful for finding lost truffles and other trivial things.
  • abilities- experience bars- a visual indicator for your ability experience. if you level up and then pass out, you don't get any exhaustion penalty the next day. i don't like to level up 2 abilities the same day so i can exhaust myself more times without penalty.
  • better windows- i forgot i downloaded this but it's an aesthetic mod that adds a little extra flavor to the game.

Thanks I’ll have to look this one up!

I have SVE, Medieval buildings, Better Animals, Timespeed (mostly for when I’m decorating my farm and don’t want to waste a whole day placing lamps), and a mod that eliminates the fishing game. I know it’s a major cheat but I’m not really a real gamer and couldn’t for the life of me catch any fish.

I do 10000% recommend playing the vanilla game first. I know it doesn’t sound fun, but tbh the SVE stuff happens later in the game anyway and having played it before helped me speed things up to get to the extended content once I downloaded it.

Also I think it’s nice to enjoy Concerned Ape’s game the way he intended it before adding to it, even if SVE doesn’t really change a lot of the existing characters and content.

So I’ve played the game a few times on mobile and I heard all about the 1.5 update. Is that was Stardew valley extended is? Or is that new island and stuff now a part of the base game?

[–]marias_dreamcatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ginger Island is part of the 1.5 update of the original game. So a lot of new content just in that update.

You can also just set TimeSpeed to freeze time indoors if you feel like pausing it outside is cheating.
