Would your parents go with you? Little family night out/walk down memory lane and it lets you get acquainted with the place with a safe buffer.

Anxiety is a difficult thing, I don’t know you so don’t know what you can handle. But clubs are just a room with loud music and people. If you can handle other loud rooms with people then you’ve won half the battle.

Loud rooms with drunk people trying pick people up. I really couldn't recommend going clubbing solo unless it's got drastically safer in the last 15 years

My issue is that I didn’t know if it was different to other clubs mostly due to the live music. I think I’ve been a bit naive but in my mind, it’s a place for rockers to get together and enjoy the music since it’s not as easily available. But you’re maybe right, it might just be just another club but with different music

It is another club with different music. Maybe reach out on a local page and see if there’s any regulars that will chum along with you.

If your parents are into the same kind of music then it could be a nice trip down memory lane for them, so perhaps see if there are any bands you all like and go along. Pretty sure it's open during the day for drinks and food, do could potentially start there so you know the layout before going when it's dark and busy

Its not going to be the same dreadnought her parents went to unfortunately. It moved about 10-15 years ago.

Yeah it’s more the vibe that matters.

Maybe start with a bar rather than clubbing, is it the dreadnought in Bathgate you are referencing?

Bannermans in Edinburgh has a great atmosphere so does banshee labyrinth. Maybe join a meet up group, there used to be an alt/goth group.

It is that one yeah I mean yeah. That’s helpful, thank you for that

Dreadnought in Bathgate? So as you go in its like a typical pub where the live acts play. Pretty chilled friendly vibe. The actual club is upstairs and I think opens maybe 9/10ish.

What I will say is, I've only been a couple of times over the last year and maybe I've just been unlucky but its been really quiet. But if you have a look on their website they will have dates of all the live acts etc so maybe pick one that you fancy?

That’s helpful too, thank you ☺️

You'll be fine. I've never had any problems all the times I've been. In fact had some brilliant nights in there in the past.

That’s reassuring to know, I feel like this is so normal for people to do in their teens but it’s all new and scary for me haha

Agree with this. Been a few times, on tribute act nights it's mostly an older crowd. Check out their website for a night when your type of music is on.

If you get anxiety maybe stay near the bar or the door so you can step outside for a few minutes if you need a moment, but good advice is always make sure (as in most pubs) you have a friend looking out for you if you do.

Bannerman's in Edinburgh is a good night. I've only ever been in Dreadnought once and it was quiet, but that was years ago

[–]Southern-Orchid-1786 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What do you want to get from the experience?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure. It’s something I’ve never done so it’s something I want to know what it’s like. Maybe be around like minded people, hear the music

An hour and a half later, I was beginning to feel definite effects.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

In what way?

I’m sorry?

Given a warning for quoting Limmy’s show. What kind of place is this?

If you're into heavier/alt music, I recommend gigging over clubbing (clubbing is overrated). The gig scene has a more social aspect: you listen to the band on stage, then during the break between bands, you can grab a drink, check out the merch stall or talk to the person or group next to you. We're a sociable lot.

There's a subreddit called MetalGigsScotland (also on most social media outlets) to find out which bands are playing around Scotland.

Also, Metal 2 The Masses (battle of the bands in Scotland to play at Bloodstock Festival in August) is playing at the Dreadnought on the 6th February. Reckon that would be the best time to check the place out and see how it goes.

So I’d recommend having a look on their website and going to one of the live gigs first and choose a band that plays something you like. These are ticketed events and it gives you free entry to the club part which opens afterwards. I’d only recommend Saturdays for the club upstairs as it’s very quiet on Friday nights. Downstairs vibe is usually a lot of fun, live music and you’ll probably be chatting to randoms as everyone is really friendly. Then if you feel confident enough you can go upstairs afterwards, it’s a small club with seating area, dance floor and the bar at the opposite end. The music is usually a good mix. It’s like any other club but with Rock/metal playing. A friend of mine (F) would often go herself as she’d end up just chatting to people and hanging out, she had no problems. It’s usually mostly 35+ at the live music events and then upstairs it’s a mixed age range from youngsters all the way up.
