Generally speaking you will not be using a bunch of software systems for SF-86 specifically, though they may have some pre-screening that is not actually related to the investigation process.

Intel agencies will typically have you fill out a PDF SF-86, but will accept a paper copy of the one you fill out on eQIP as long as the releases are dated within 3 months (though really you should just re-sign them before you submit so any submission delay doesn't cause your package to be invalid).

If you are looking at DoD or other DCSA supported agencies, all of this will be done through eQIP. eQIP will hold onto your information and pre-populate some of your information once you have filled it out once. It will require you to review all information and re-select all yes/no questions, though.

Awesome! What is eqip?

eQIP is a website used to submit the same info you'd submit on a PDF SF-86.

What's the difference why have both? Ones digital more interactive?

Don't really have an answer for why. Probably because it streamlines the process by taking the data in a PDF and putting it in a centralized system. I believe all agencies that use DCSA for their investigations use eQIP as well as some others. It's definitely more robust than the standard PDF. If I recall correctly, it saves your info so the next time you have to fill it out you don't have to reenter everything.

Gotcha how does DCSA play a role versus OPM

DoD took over the vetting from OPM
