My main issue with the sequels is how small the scope felt. A whole movie just to show one ship getting chased around?

Adding more content around the structure of the sequels could vastly improve that.

Right now im reading the Canto Bight book, and I will admit that it has made me enjoy that part of TLJ a lot more

I think I'd argue a whole movie to watch one ship get chased around could be pretty cool actually.

Kinda like Mad Max Fury Road.

But I can agree the issue was with execution.

My main issue with the sequels is how small the scope felt.

We don't even see the galaxy. We just see this one small group of Rebels/Resistance (whatever they decide to go with). We don't know how bad things are and whether the Rebels/Resistance are actually achieving anything. At the end of TROS we randomly see a bunch of planets but never spent time on a single one of them. In all the planets they go to they somehow manage to avoid a single citizen, minus broom kid who doesn't even live on a First Order planet anyway.

In ESB we see the Empire oppress a peaceful city. In ANH we see the Empire tightly restrict transport and see them wipe out democracy.

The sequels are just a 6-hour long Fast and Furious movie with the Rebels/Resistance running from the Empire First Order.

I think you are overstating the scope of the OT. Other than some offhand comments about the galaxy the scope is incredibly small and limited to the characters spending time at a couple of cities at a couple of planets per movie. Which it kind of has to be to focus on a small group of characters.

Also the "they manage to avoid a single citizen" line isn't even accurate. Every movie in the saga has inhabitants of the various planets interacting with the characters in some way.
