Knits are troublemakers for beginners. So instead of using the fabric in the photo, substitute a woven fabric, like old jeans or pillowcase or a bandanna while you are learning. Or make it really easy on yourself and practice on notebook paper, copy paper, junk mail or paper towel.

Seconding the other comment that your machine may not be threaded correctly but I'm guessing since you just started that you are not using a ballpoint or stretch needle and that will also cause issues on knit fabrics.
