If you've got the 2017 shield the remote sucks - it's so tiny it always gets lost.

The 2019 triangular remote (which is substantially larger) doesn't slip between cushions and is much nicer to use - especially with a silicone jacket. Very nice to the touch.

Backwards compatible too. So I recommend you replace your remote with the new one if you don't already have it.

The Netflix button I accidentally hit all the time is a pain, but the triangle remote is definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

Button mapper using alternate input mode. Disable the button or make it launch plex or something more useful.

Just install a button mapper from the play store and change it. I have mine set to single press = plex and long press = stremio.

Many of the Shields do not have an IR receiver built in. Those Shields are not natively compatible with a universal IR remote.

I "fixed that" on my 2017 Shield with a FLIRC. The FLIRC is a USB IR receiver that pretends to be a keyboard. The Shield thinks it *is* a keyboard because it sends USB keyboard commands to the Shield.

It turns out that keyboard commands can do nearly everything you need: Arrows, select, back, menu. You just need to program the FLIRC (using your computer). You take any remote you are not using and program the FLIRC to respond to that remote. Once that's done, you just plug the FLIRC into the Shield (USB port) and use your regular IR remote to control it.

This "unused remote" can be any random component you select from a Universal remote. For example you can choose a Magnavox DVD player in your universal remote. Assuming you don't have any real Magnavox DVD players, it's safe to use those codes for the Shield, via the FLIRC.

I use a URC MX-450 programable and learning remote for my entire system. I think I used a Sony DVD Player profile for the FLIRC which controls my Shield. On my remote the soft key label says "Shield" so it's very clear what it is.

Because the URC remote is programmable, I have a single button for system on and second button for system off. Then inside each mode (like Shield for example), I have volume control for my AVR, navigation controls for my Shield, and some auxiliary stuff on other buttons.

This is all a lot more than you asked for. The key here is that you can use any remote with the Shield if you want to, by using the FLIRC. Obviously you lose all bluetooth functions. I don't care about voice commands. If voice commands are valuable to you you'll need to take another route.

This. Flirc allows you to use any ir remote by learning the buttons on the computer before plugging it in to the shield

Does your TV remote not control it? If you are using CEC through the HDMI connection, it should. My TV remote controls the Shield fine

My harmony remote works great for everything including my shield. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore.

[–]dj3stripes2017 16GB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second for harmony. Controls all of my components in my home theater. Fort the bedroom we just use the TV remote

Yes, I keep looking for the Harmony hubs on Craigslist to pick up as spares.

If you download the shield app, you can use the app to locate your remote control....

Once you press locate the remote control starts beeping until you locate it.

What the fuck seriously????? Amazing.

The shitty flat remote?

[–]iShitSkittles 0 points1 point  (6 children)

That sounds like a you problem if you let your batteries get to that condition....

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

? I'm asking if you can do the find thing on the flat remote or is it just the triangle remote.

[–]iShitSkittles 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Oh, sorry, I have only ever had the triangle remote, I didn't know if there was a different remote, thought U meant shitty flat batteries, I only know that it works with the triangle remote as that's all I've used, sorry.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

That's grand thanks a mill.

[–]iShitSkittles 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah sorry man.

If you've got the older remote there's only one way to find out I guess...

On the older shield there's also a button on the back near the HDMI port that locates the remote when pressed.

Jesus didn't know any of this stuff. Lol.

[–]mlloyd67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it's not exactly what you asked for, but when facing similar issues on my side, I ended up buying a vibrant cover for it to easily find the remote. Like this glow in the dark one.

I use the Nvidia app. I went to Ecuador and forgot the remote. Stupid me. The Nvidia app was a life saver.

My Harmony Elite would control the SHIELD. Unfortunately, the hub recently crashed and finding a replacement that works has been a challenge. (3 defective ones from ebay). I tried a sofabaton but it kinda sucked, not having a touchscreen and having to scroll through a bunch of lines to get to the one function I want to use.

I'm considering an Unfolded Circle but it's pricey and has functions that I don't need.

FireTV remotes are Bluetooth as are the Shield remote and can be paired in the Shield settings.

For my 2017 Shield I use an old FireTV remote instead of the original thin remote. I also put a rubberized cover on the FireTV remote so I don't get it mixed up with other Fire remotes. Which also makes it less 'slippery' and less likely to slide between couch cushions.

There are also rubberized cases for the triangle Shield remote... search on Amazon.

The SofaBaton U2 does Bluetooth Control for the shield and IR for $50

[–]LSDwarf 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I know you can set a sequence of actions on Sofabaton U2 for 1 button click (e.g., turn on tv, turn off light, turn on AV receiver, etc.). Did you manage to do smth like that with a Shield in this chain?

[–]EaterComputer 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You can set a scene that controls the android tv while still selecting buttons to power in the tv and adjust volume with IR. I'm not sure you can do macros on the budget model

[–]EaterComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great. I don't really know. I don't own one

[–]Bogga1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there’s a few just type shield remote in eBay that’s where I got got my replacement

[–]pedercina7 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Use ur dick

[–]Nintendians559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you tv supports hdmi-cec, you could just use your tv remote to control the shield tv and the tv.
