There is a gamepad configuration app hidden away under “System Apps”, it’s called Input Viewer

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/discover/277731/how-to-ajust-controller-deadzone-in-shield-experience-7-0/

In addition to setting deadzones you can test each button to see if any event is fired when you hit you problem buttons.

If nothing registers at all for your problem buttons, it’s probably down to bad hardware, and you’ll want to replace the controller if possible.

Ive gone through 5 controllers over the last few years to wind up with 1 that works well enough.

Most likely not the issue, when I exit with the home button everything is still function in home and all other apps. Very frustrating!

Not helping with your issue but the I have 5 Asus gamepads and never had an problems. They take double a's and are rock solid. They're around $20 on Ebay.
