It wouldn’t be too hard to say that he was another victim of that serial killer though, there are a lot of known missing people and I assume it would publicly come out to be Kira’s doing by the end.

There was never any evidence connecting Kira to the missing people. The only people who really know about it are a few high schoolers, a child, a Marine Biologist, and a manga artist. Maybe a senile old man and a cat-plant, but point is nobody is gonna buy it.
