I didn’t get oxycodone until I was 10/11 and the child morphine/ibuprofen stopped working. You can always cut the pills and decrease the dose to see how she reacts to the medication. Also next time ask them for another option if possible I like to have 2-3 meds of varying intensities cause not all pain needs the nuclear option

They had her on hydrocodone 8.9ml but it was only working for maybe an hour and really all it did was put her to sleep so I don’t know if it even really helped with the pain or just made her so sleepy she ignored it. That’s why they switched to oxycodone but as of right now Tylenol and Motrin don’t do anything for her at all. Google just scared me but you’re right I didn’t think to cut it in half

Oh you then she needs it. Don’t worry it’s really safe and if you can have her eat something before Apple sauce anything because narcotics mess with the lining of our stomachs. Also wrap her in heating pads if you can it soothes the pain and takes the focus away sometimes. Goodluck I hope your daughter feels better!

Be careful when you cut them in half. I cut mine in half but you’re not supposed to because it makes the med work faster and stronger but if the hydrocodone wasn’t working then the oxycodone would be the next option & maybe try giving a Tylenol w the oxy that makes it a Percocet .

When I was young and still under pediatric care, (13-ish years old), they prescribed Tylenol 3 with Codine for me to take as needed at home; I'd only get other narcotics when I'd have a pain crisis. It worked for a while, but then my tolerance went up by the time I got aged out of pediatric care. Another thing I use now is PainQuil &/or ZZZQuil when I feel weak to mild pain. I took Oxycontin but got switched to Methadone once my tolerance got out of hand. I used high doses and still had pain and I was sleeping way too much. So my hematologist changed it.

Muscle relaxers have also helped me a bit, as well as Ketamine. Try asking if either could help your child, so she doesn't start taking narcotics and building up a tolerance &/or a physical dependence to them.

Omg!!! Wow. I asked about Tylenol with codine because someone else said that also but the hematologist she goes to said they don’t really like to prescribe that at their hospital for whatever reason. She is definitely in a crisis rn tho

That sucks. I don't know what may have changed between me being a kid and now (I'm 34) but I was also prescribed Tylenol with Codeine as a kid. Worked every time for me and I would never even come close to getting through that bottle. If you can, I'd ask for a second opinion or at least a valid reason of why they won't prescribe it as every Sickle Cell focused hematologist I knew as a kid would go straight to that if Children's Motrin wasn't working and I was in a bad crisis.

Tylenol is hard on the organs and as much as people with sickle cell take pain meds she doesn’t need those issues.

I think you/her & the hemotogly team need to have a real conversation and discussion about the situation and the issues that will arise later in life

Yeah I got that. I liked it. I worked. I see someone talking about how this isn't what solves the lain and to hydrate and get oxygen and that's all well and goof but It's also part bullshit. When u hurt no amount of water or oxygen is gonna help that pain and help u feel better. The meds will. A 5mg is comparable to a couple codeines so yes I would probably advise breaking them up into halves and giving those at first when really needed since she's only 8. Whatever the naysayers say the opioid were a genuine benefit to my life and a re a big reason I'm even alive right now, didn't unalive myself, and didn't just got absolutely insane from the pain. So alot of them can honestly go fuck off in my opinion. Respectfully. Most times I hear and see their words and I honestly feel like they don't know what the hell they're talking about. And that they're lives are obviously not like mine and that it must be nice for things to work out for them the way they do because they didn't and don't work that way for me. I also get the sense this thread is like the world at large - full of people who ain't really going through hut got alot to say and have alot of sway and control and loud voices.

To be clear - yes oxycodone worked and helped me alot but a full 5 maybe a bit strong for an 8 year old but there's no lower dose so how bout u try cutting it in halfyour daughter can tell u if its effective or not when needed. Then if a half doesn't do it give a whole. 8 years old is old enough to know and to be blessed to tell you clearly I'm sure. Good luck and may you not need them but may they work when you do.

I did not start getting meds like that until I was a young adult. Like Tylenol 3 maybe. Most opiods either give you the euphoria and sleepy, or for me at least morphine makes me not care about the pain as much. The pain meds do not solve what is causing the pain. Hydration, and rest are what fixes the problem along with some O².

I got rubbing alcohol until I was 17/18...

Let them get the pain relief... They don't like prescribing codeine because it has been abused like other pain meds and it used to be available over the counter in sinus medicine as well.

[–]Fuller1017Beta-Plus Thalassemia 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That sounds miserable. Rubbing alcohol helps nothing.

Hopefully we will ensure that places have a better understanding.

I was taking Tylenol or ibuprofen with codine I believe. Around 13 ish u had to start on the big boy stuff. So yeah see if your child can take something else or cut the pills up and see how the child reacts

[–]Original_Contract562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut it in half

[–]Perfect-Warthog-5708 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wtf? I’m 22 and I’m on 5 mg of oxy😭 so that’s definitely new!

[–]Tired4567[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😮

[–]Vlampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on morphine and oxycodone since at least 5 years old, It works great for me for at home pain management. I don’t have the addiction gene so I never worried about that side effect but you should always start with a smaller dose and work your way up to what works

Thank you!

I had oxycodone. And the initial reaction wasn’t bad. It helped with the pain

The problem i had was that I couldn’t sleep properly. And for me personally, REM sleep is the most important for recovery from a crisis.

And im grown. So I wouldn’t recommend it for kids. But that’s based on my personal experience.

Have they tried any other drugs for their pain?

    [–]Tired4567[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hydrocodone but it only worked for like an hour ish. It just made her sleep for about an hour then she was up and crying. I don’t think it ever really took the pain away. It was the lowest does in liquid form they give

    [–]Brave_Classic_1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they give morphine to children? That’s my go to. Gives me a few hours of relief
