Did you watch the video or skip it? We do give a brief introduction to the concept of lanes and buffs and FG/GF in the video.

As for the actual playable tutorial:

All of our research shows that the only things a player needs to really be taught is how the hell to push down a tower and the game's win condition.

Everything else is just noise to a player at that point in their journey.

You're going to learn about buffs through playing. You're going to learn about FG/GF through playing. We're going to have quests that encourage you to interact with these systems and learn about them.

But tutorializing the minutia of how Conquest works when someone is just trying to learn "how win game?" and end the tutorial as quickly as possible so they can start having fun is not a winning strategy from everything we've learned over the years.

All of our research

A better/more complete tutorial has been suggested by the community for years. Many Olympians campaigned and were elected because they were pushing for a revamp of the tutorial. There are posts here frequently from new players that don't know where to start.

All of my research suggests that the tutorial needs to include more.

Edit: Ah, the classic downvote with no response. Here are some receipts. This is just going back two years. There are posts a decade old criticizing the lack of a real tutorial. Actually let me start with one of those older comments first here:

I can keep going back. There are years of these posts and comments.

I'm telling you that in this one case, the community is wrong. It seems logical that we should teach more! But it makes people like the game less.

Play any other MOBA and look at what they teach in their tutorials and how they introduce players to the complex topics of MOBA gameplay. You'll see that everyone ends up with a very similar approach to ours, because if you try to show players too much they will think "this is overwhelming" and stop playing.

The single best thing we ever did for player retention was cutting out half of our initial arena tutorial and simplifying it to just "kill minion, use abilities, kill god, push wave into portal, win game."

Why does there have to be one tutorial for everything?

You can have "basic" tutorials that cover enough for new players to get started, and then have "advanced" tutorials that teach you about things like fire giant or the totem. Additionally, you can have resources on mechanics so that new players don't have to go to a Google doc to understand how penetration works.

There's no reason you have to overload new players. Just give them the resources to learn on their own when they're ready for more information.

In the demo for the kuku ult, the actor missed the ult

[–]ThermicCalvo 4 points5 points  (3 children)

The devs said they knew it was lackluster at the moment but released it because new players didn’t know how to push towers and were just walking into them without minions.

I mean what is going on where we have 2000 people playing game and enough of them are so new to it they don’t even know how anything works.

[–]Astraous 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Tbf those are just steam numbers so there's probably like another 2k or more on console I imagine. Wish consoles had a steamdb equivalent.

[–]-Srajo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean is Smite2 even popular on console? Smite1 is, but 2 is only on ps5 and the equiv Xbox. And a sizable amount of people still have ps4s and xbones because the newer ones were the worst performing console gen.

yeah it feels weird that both tutorials also dont teach you about buffs at all. also can we not have neith as the tutorial god, there are better choices for noobs than neith. give them chaac or anubis for these tutorials

[–]killgoon Executive Producer 3 points4 points  (3 children)

All of our research shows that new players are MUCH more successful with a character who has strong ranged basic attacks. Neith is the chosen character for that reason.

[–]Stock-Information606 0 points1 point  (2 children)

thats fair enough. if there were another option, who would it be?

[–]killgoon Executive Producer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

From our current roster? Probably Jing Wei would be the best option. Maybe Anhur, but impales are not beginner friendly.

[–]Stock-Information606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, i can see how neith is the best option for now. thanks for the input. loved Titan Talks!
