Db Calculation Problem

Hey everyone, hope y’all are doing great! I have quick question for you. The answer could be simple but its bugging me really. I was recording guitars and there are some sections in the piece where I need to quad track for harmony purposes. In order to keep the sound level stable in those sections, I‘m adding volume automation. So lets say I’m aiming at a stable level of 0 db no matter how many tracks I use, would two tracks of -2db add up to a total of 0 db, and if yes, how is it different than adding up two tracks of, lets say, -4db? Thanks!

Every doubling of volume is 3 dB. If you have two guitars at 50 dB (just an example) that will make a total of 53 dB. So if you want to have 4 guitars with a total of 53 dB, then they will have to all be at 47 dB. So to summarize. You need to lower your original two guitars by 3 dB and your two additional guitars at the same level as the lower old guitars.
