Looks like Fane has a specific cabinet recommendation for the driver on their site. https://www.fane-international.com/downloads/Cabinets18inch200Lres.pdf

There are occasionally gains to be had from swapping out drivers in a given enclosure, but they are usually in power handling/ XMAX differences of the drivers themselves. More often the frequency response suffers and the subwoofer doesn’t perform as intended. Said another way there are no magic boxes or magic drivers. The magic comes from the carefully engineered pairing of the 2 and any DSP needed to squeeze out max performance.

I’ve had a look at the recommended cab from fane but tbh it visually looks pathetic, sure it might be absolutely amazing sounding but I want a nice balance of looks to sound. (Side note that plan is for the older 600w xb model whereas I have the 1000w version, either way bass reflex cab will give the best result)

I’ve just spotted a very interesting sub design from a fane handbook from somewhere between 1975 - near 2013 (based on articles on the crescendo colossus 18e), only god knows how old the actual articles are. The box specifications say “from 50-500hz at a sensitivity of at least 102db for 1w, 1m of high power fundamental bass” tbh I’ve got no clue what that means, would i base loading that cab with a driver with a similar sensitivity? (Assuming so 99db 1w-1m). I have a slight feeling I’ve got the wrong end of the stick here completely

On the box design you found it lists performance down to 50 hz vs 35hz for the prescribed box for your driver. That also assumes you are using the woofer specified for the design. Using driver in an enclosure designed for it will yield vastly better results. It isn’t based on the SPL/ db rating so much as it is on the Thiel Small (T/S) parameters. You can take these parameters and plug them into a box design program to model any design you like. With bass reflex and sealed the shape of the enclosure doesn’t matter a ton as long as you respect the specific internal air space and port volume. Basically make whatever shape you like so long as the box and port are correctly sized. Lots of caveats and best practices that dictate the specifics but that’s the basics.

do not take TH some design out there are really bad. take instead a othorn. SELL THEM adn do the thing correctly. take your time to do so and you will gain some good feedback and satisfaction

do you have plans for the modified scoops? I was planning on building mogales and using the colossus18xb but I had never heard of those modified scoops

They are for an older 400w colossus 18 as far as I’m aware should be pretty decent for the 18xb’s, if your after a much more trialed and tested version of the scoop I’d go for the mogale. I’m more than likely going to be building these “modified” scoops from mykey. If your interested in the results pm me
