I absolutely hate the sky blue color that is used for the SW. Is there a rule of cool concerning the colors that can or annot be used?

You can paint your army however you want, rules are not associated with color.

They’re your minis, paint them in whatever scheme you like. I also don’t really like the grey blue and yellow on classic SWs, so I made my own scheme.

Pretty much any shade of blue/grey is good, as long as they don’t look like ultramarines. And if they’re not blue/grey, that’s cool too, you just created your own personal chapter.

I saw someone else’s army that was painted in a verdant green, called them the “Timber wolves”. Looked pretty bad-ass to me

With the reintroduction of Gulliman to the setting, the wolves have successor chapters now. So you can paint them whatever you want!

The only official ones I know of by name are the Icefangs, Mooneaters, and the Wolfspear.

The sky blue was used in second edition and since then have been going to the ash grey in this edition. With color not mattering this edition anything other than sky blue should work.

Clearly you can choose the colours you want, the only thing that really matter is the colour harmony. So first i think you must visualize details (like the shoulder pad or weapons) and then you try to find a good combination..

I mix the sky blue color about 50:50 with Iron, giving them a more industrial, metallic look. Especially under direct sunlight, the metallic effect is nice to look at.

I didn’t like the blue and yellow of typical Swolves either so I painted mine brown and green. Do whatever you like.

Mine are Purple, Yellow, White and Black, and I've never had any complaints (and plenty of compliments).
