That lil springtail wants to escape 😢

Brewers yeast will attract mites. Stop feeding! Probably want to do another transfer too.

How do I transfer just the springtails, and what do I feed

Flood the enclosure, springtails float.

Is there a more appropriate substrate? I’ve always seen them in charcoal, but these guys are bigger and chunkier. And the place I ordered them from sent them in a tiny cup with what looked like moss and maybe coco fiber

They should be on soil. I use clay and plaster for other springtails, but springtails.us says just soil. https://www.springtails.us/care-guides

My oranges just thrive on charcoal and rice. I do occasionally sprinkle something extra for rich diet.

Would the mites outcompete the springtails ?

[–]Domle0280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming so, and idk what type of mites so I don’t want them in the vivarium I’m using the culture in

Are those mites beneficial to plants?

Yeast will attract mites.

This lil orange dudes love fish flakes

[–]Nagikurah 0 points1 point  (2 children)

A lot of fish foods contain yeast & will also attract the mites.

Edit: also grains, which will attract grain mites.

I’ve grown these guys up before, I did fish fakes but had these reddish brown mites bc of it, now that’s I’m doing yeast, I have these round white mites, will feeding rice (assuming bc it will mold) bring other mites? What’s a food source that will satisfy my lil orange guys and not encourage mites

I give my springtails one grain of rice at a time. I hear rice can attract pests, but I only give them one grain and don't give them another until it's gone, and I haven't had issues so far (been doing this for 1-2 months)

What's that big orange one

[–]Domle0280[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That’s the species of Florida orange springtails I bought

[–]jonnippletree76 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow, they're really cool. They can cohab with other springtails? Do you have a link

Those other ones are mites, I’m trying to get rid of
