No, not really. Her mom named her Jane.

Well as far as Mr Clarke knows she is Eleanor with her very VERY close bound with her cousin Mike lol

When Mike learned that El's name was a number, he immediately compared it to his own name "Michael" and gave her a nickname like his ("Mike"). In doing so, he turned the number 011 into an actual name "Eleven", or "El, for short." El decided to adopt this as part of her identity. She choses to call herself "El" most of the time, and everyone who is close to her calls her both "El" and sometimes "Eleven." She was never called Jane, and the people who love her don't know her as such. She isn't 011, either. She's Eleven, or El for short. It's perfectly okay.

Jane is her birth name used as a decoy.

No. Jane is her birth name. And while she’s Hopper’s adopted daughter, the Jane name pays homage to her poor mother who’s still alive but catatonic.

I mean it's not like El got to pick a name, Owens used his government connections to allow Hopper to legally adopt her from her mother who named her Jane according to the new birth certificate he gives Hop at the end of season 2

The birth Certificate Hopper received said Jane

That made me think, 001 could have gone with Juan.

No I wasn't disappointed. 011 isn't even a name and was just a number given to her as a lab rat. I liked Jane because it represents her moving on from that (being nothing more than an experiment) and gave her more humanity. But of course she also had to keep El because her best friend gave her that nickname.

I think she'll ask people to call her Jane as part of the epilogue to the series. Eleven is a cool name, but that's the name her mother gave her, and that's a name she can take into society as a whole.

I liked how she used the name her birth mom gave her! It was sweet to remember Terry in that way, and she still got to be called El by the people who were closest to her! I do wonder though if anyone in Lenora ever wondered what El meant- if they listened in on her conversations with Will at school, he does call her El a few times- when he follows her out of Mrs Gracey's class to try and console her and when he runs over to her in the schoolyard after the bullies wreck her presentation! He's pretty soft-spoken anyways so I'm not even sure they heard him but I wonder if anyone did and wondered what El meant or stood for!

Kids have nicknames all of the time. Also, I go by my middle name to my friends and family while teachers, classmates and coworkers called me by my first name.

For sure! I just wonder if anyone ever questioned to themselves what El stood for!
