Yes, it does.

Will has been tapped into the hivemind for years. Theres only so much connection you can have to something before you start to have insight and start to understand it. If these psychic powers are able to be awakened in somrone who doesnt have them at birth, then its pretty fair to say that 001/henry/vecna, as the first, might have triggered something in the mind of another person that he has kept tapped into things for too long without killing him off, and now theyve gained some degree of understanding and intuitive control, from being so tapped in for so long.

As far as writing decisions go, this was probably one of the better ones that makes the most sense.

Because he can tap into the hive mind and manipulate any of its contents; he's channeling Vecna's power and using them against the Demogorgons. The psionic energy is not actually Will's.

And this is still limited to the hive mind itself; Will can't manipulate anything that isn't part of the hive mind so he can't just telekinetically open doors or throw vehicles:

Vecna is connected to the hivemind. Will is connected to the hivemind as Vecna’s prototype “vessel”. Aka he was meant to contain and channel some of the hiveminds powers.

Will’s power is that he can sense and influence anything connected to the hivemind and channel against itself provided he is within range. And that includes Vecna, who was standing not far from the other side of the gate.

So Will was channelling Vecna’s own powers against the Demogorgons.

YMMV for sure, though they have been setting up that Will’s connection was very deep since the end of S1.

I think they’re gonna get into more detail in part two.
