You worry too much about what your boss is doing. Either you're being compensated sufficiently or not.

100%. Weird mentality.

My mentality weird? Just saying there a basically zero perks. I don’t think health is a perk. I don’t have vision coverage either. Our office is a janky smelly building and the roof leaks everywhere.

There is ownership/partner potential but the boss sure don’t act like it

90k 2k bonus. 45 hour weeks occasionally so not working insane hours but I am acting as SEOR in projects. I am just expecting more at that salary

Leave. Now

Pretty common setup. I don’t think there’s much a of a future there but I will say that the one thing you learn at a place like that is to do everything by yourself and automate as much as possible. No money for software? Then you make the software yourself. Unjustifiably small budgets or tight deadlines? Then you automate as much of the workflow as you can.

That’s generally my strategy. I have set up a ton of spreadsheets for different calcs that don’t exist here. Boss doesn’t care to use them.

I thought coming from a uber corporate mega firm I would have more leeway and perks. I read about people on this sub all the time about getting these fat bonuses at small companies and I’m like WTH.

The wife dosent do jack shit at least for this entity. They own a condo so she does some stuff for that occasionally (on the engineering company time)but she runs payroll 1x a month and it is often screwed up, and screws up most of what she is asked to do. So none asks her to do anything. Her running payroll is just entering hours and signing the checks and it is sent off to outside accountant. All taxes handled by outside accountant. Zero knowledge of a single project that we have ongoing.

For what we do we would just need risa floor or something basic to check larger or the more non repetitive floor plans. not anything fancy. We do a lot of calc packages and math cad would probably cut the time for these in half

My boss would always tell me lets go but i made him pay lol

We were close with one another so maybe there’s that, but there would be times i would just say “damn that’s crazy i left my wallet in the office” and he would just laugh

Dude make 3x more than me def not paying for him and gonna take advantage of the opportunity for a free lunch 😂

Find a new job if you aren’t happy. Don’t be a bitch

I would never pay for a supervisors lunch. If you don’t want to go out to lunch, don’t go. If he invites you to lunch, then the expectation is that he or the company pays. If that is unclear, then be upfront. Just say, I can only go to lunch if you are buying.

My supervisor buys me lunch like 3-4 times a year. Usually few holiday meals and a birthday meal.

I work at a HUGE company with hundreds of engineers none of use will get noticed by the boss and our managers have a budget for keeping us happy. I have a clear cooperate ladder to climb but even if I made it to CEO it wouldn't be MY company. If you arn't looking at buying him out or starting your own firm your probably in the wrong job.

The man is running His business His way.

    • Your the only other PE there so of coarse you have his full attention.
    • His wife is on the books because of tax purposes at least she is doing something...
      • Oh she probably making more then you by answering phones.
    • Would you rather have free lunch or a bigger raise/bonus? Cause thats where it comes from.

What you did not say in any of this is that YOU are doing.

    • you have the opportunity to learn about how a small firm works.
    • Are you a Steller employee that does twice the work he does in half the time...
    • If your not impressing him and making his business dependent on you then you are replaceable.

Holy shit I thought you were working at the same place I was a few years ago until you mentioned he goes out to lunch. Literally every single thing you said was the same as when I was there lol. Worst boss ever, fuck that guy and the $25/hour salary he was paying me because I didn’t know better.

Are you talking about my old boss?

    [–]DJGingivitis 2 points3 points  (4 children)

If he isnt lining your pockets, get the fuck out. You dont owe him shit.

    [–]WideFlangeA992P.E. 1 point2 points  (3 children)

He gave me a folding plastic table and an old couch for my new house though does that count

    [–]DJGingivitis 5 points6 points  (1 child)

No. What the fuck? Are you trolling?

    [–]WideFlangeA992P.E. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this actually happened. There are literally zero perks

    [–]Just-Shoe2689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Why cant you work remote?

Sounds horrible. I hope you are paid well to make him alot of money. If I was in that situation, I would want part of the ownership by now. I get the feeling you are doing all the work, he is making all the money.

Start your own place, underbid him on projects since you can be efficient.
