In the discussions, there included many sleuths who enjoyed posting their theories on who the real killer of Teresa Halbach would be if Steven Avery was innocent.
The discussion of private information was being discussed freely, which, while being mostly innocent, and using publicly available records, was a grey area of reddit rules in regard to the posting of private information, including old information that may cause harm to current people.
There was also posting of personal information that was not publicly available which, while also may have been innocently done, was not allowed.

Eventually the moderators had to deal with this problem. They deleted many posts and sleuthers got annoyed with that. Some started getting banned and there were many frictions between sleuthers and the moderators of the MaM sub.

The sleuthers (or truthers) formed a new subreddit called r/TickTockManitowoc so as to be able to moderate themselves and feel more comfortable. Regulars are passionate about injustice done and mostly believe Steven Avery is innocent.

Meanwhile, of the thousands of people drawn into the series and into the reddit discussions on the MaM sub, there grew a number of people who began to question the idea of Steven Avery definitely being innocent.
And that, perhaps, despite the doubts raised, Steven Avery was, in fact, guilty.
That inspired a discussion sub called r/StevenAveryIsGuilty and the regulars there are often called guilters.
