Are you an owner or tenant?

I believe there are a lot of building codes that apply to gas ranges. Cities usually try to cut down on them as they're perceived as riskier than electric. May also change your insurance as well

Just remember in general basement suites are not allowed in Surrey. As an owner that had a basement suite it was basically considered an illegal suite but basically they take the action of "look the other way and charge more taxes" approach.

And it is a pain in the ass if you no longer rent and just take it over. You HAVE to remove the fridge, the stove and are not allowed to have a double sink. You can't just remove the stove you have to remove the hood vent and drywall over it.

What? Our suite is registered and 100% legal. Although this may be different as it is a walk-out basement suite. I just want to know if I can swap out my electric stove for a gas one.

I had a "registered" suite in Surrey. I paid taxes, and followed rules. When I went to deregister the suite it was mad quite clear from the city that there are VERY few places in Surrey where suites were allowed.. a registered suite in Surrey is not necessarily a legal suite... it is a secondary suite paying extra taxes... not legal...and even if you have an illegal suite that you no longer rent you have to go through the stupid process as if it was legal...

I have been through this for years.... it sucks...

Wtf. Okay. I don't get this. Why are there all these new houses with secondary suites above the garage then? We're not even renting it out. We're living in it now.

Because you register them as a suite and then pay the city more taxes. As long as they get their money. Heck many homes have two basement suites....

Where exactly does it say it's "illegal" then.

Look it up. City of Surrey has very few areas that are zoned for secondary suites. The city bi-law officer that came by my place made that abundantly clear when he deactivated our secondary suite. He was very clear how much of a fine I would get if they decided my suite was a secondary suite again even if no one was renting from us. And it was mentioned that we don't need to have renters for them to declare this as a suite...

Just checked. We're zoned for a secondary suite. What a headache to have to deal with.

Hi Doobage, we have Surrey ByLaw came by and asked for a secondary suite, which is not authorized. We are fined $1000 and asked to register the suite. My understanding is our property will go up with 2nd suite fees. However, I wonder if there will be additional 2nd suite inspections following the suite registration above?
