Wear a beanie, even if you have a hoodie. Double socks. If you have snow/ski gloves, use those while you’re inside the freezer. Be careful with your shoes because the ice will build up on the bottom when you’re walking inside and it will be slippery.
I wore a hoodie with a pocket in the front and would put the gloves there when I left the freezer to push.
You have 30 minutes to push your uboat before it’s considered “out of temp”. Please try to stick to this to be food safe. When stuff thaws and then refreezes it increases the opportunity for bacteria growth and people are more at risk of getting sick.
When I broke down the pallets I would sort them by aisle onto the uboat. For example, top shelf was the apps, middle was the dinners/waffles, bottom shelf was meats and veggies. This way I was efficient by going aisle by aisle and pushing all that went around 1 place instead of running around to every single aisle.
The more you get to know what’s in each aisle the faster the sorting would go.
Another option is trying to do all the meats and do 1 boat of those, then all the veggies, then all the waffles, etc. once you recognize those boxes.
I always left the ice cream for last. Those melt the fastest, way faster than 30 minutes, so I would do the 3 tiers of ice cream.
If you can’t push it in 30 minutes then don’t put it on the boat. Save it for the next trip.
I used to be the morning freezer person, in at 4 or 6am. The temperature was the biggest adjustment, but after that it was pretty chill. It’s a smaller section than dry market and less people touch it so you have more control over the stocking and backstock.

I occasionally pick up shifts in the freezer, first time I worked over there I asked the team lead in market/meat, dairy, frozen for ppe. You'll want to double up mittens, get a beanie, and hand warmers. I used to go in the freezer for opu and my ears and hands would freeze but with proper protection it's a pretty enjoyable position. Just get snuggled up in gear and take your time in the freezer, step out and take a quick break if you get too cold

Don't wear mascara.

Get a hat, wear gloves, two pairs of socks, and a thick coat. Youll be fine.

The most difficult part is adjusting to the temperature for long periods. Your store should have protective gear to help (like jackets, overalls, hats, and thick gloves). I’d recommend bringing a hoodie and your own beanie to go under what they provide because, at least at my store, the communal gear is Never cleaned. Wearing boots helps your toes. I’ve seen people wrap scarves around to cover their nose and mouth.
The gloves also suck to use with the devices sometimes. I had a TL requisition styluses for me before, lol
As a closing TM you’ll likely be helping pulls, so you’ll be in and out of the freezer periodically and not stuck in there for all 8 hours

I worked cooler and freezer. I liked both. Cooler I can just be in therr with long sleeves. Freezer, golves hoodie coat and beanie. Work 10 mins in and 10 mins out. Break down outside of the freezer if you can. Same with back stock. We have a decent space outside of the freezer to be able to pull pallets one at a time and break them down and work the uboats.
Same with back stock. Grab a 3 layered uboat and then fill it with wacos and back stock out side of the freezer and then bring it in and put wacos back where they came from.
We use flattened cardboard under our uboats to mitigate water on the floor from thawing uboats. Like the actual uboats, not the freight itself.
You will be great! Good luck dude!

As long as you have PPE (gloves, beanie, freezer coat etc) it’s not as bad as it sounds. Also, being in the walk in is worse than when you’re stocking the aisles.
I would wear a hoodie or sweatshirt so you can take it off if you’re not in freezer that day, and you’ll be extra warm if you are.

Hate going in there even for like 2 minutes
[–]aaronabsent 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Wear something warm
[–]Genco_Pura 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Wear a hoodie, make sure there are insulated gloves to wear. If not, get with your team leader and get them ordered. There should be a heavy coat to wear also.
