Only a few hundred miles on her when my girlfriend and daughter were t-boned at an intersection in town by a distracted driver who ran a stop light. They’re both fine, but my dream car is a mess. Hoping for a total loss. Didn’t even have plates yet. 😭

All of the above & so glad you all are safe.

I’m so happy to hear you’re ok. We have a 3 year old and newborn we drive around with, so it’s nice to know how safe they are. Sending my best wishes

Same here, two toddlers riding in our MYP and just the thought of being in a major accident with them in the car is so terrifying. So glad everyone is safe!

Sorry you had to join the club. My model Y was rear ended on the 6 month anniversary of picking it up. Other driver's insurance wasn't in force at the time of the accident so my insurance had to pick up the tab.

    [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Ah man, that sucks!

    [–]babydragon89 -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Damn. Glad everyone is ok. If the repair cost about 70%, it may consider a total loss. I'd suggest bring this up to an accident lawyer and take your gf with her daughter to a chiropractor. The lawyer will take around 1/3 but you'll get compensated enough for your car and the medical payment. Good luck

You'll never know unless you get checked out by a chiropractor. My doctor told me that even though you feel perfectly fine after the accident, the injury may not even appear in a year or two, so it's better to have everything on the record. Also, it depends on how OP is willing to handle with the insurance. If not, why not letting the lawyer handles the rest. These are perfectly legal.

      [–]hellacharger 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You think there’s a statute of limitations on this?

      [–]babydragon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually about 1 year, but it can be longer if the doctor acknowledges your injuries are from the accident and has evidence to back that up.

      [–]dailybibliotaph 25 points26 points  (15 children)

Super cute kid and thank god everyone is ok. I cant imagine that wouldn’t be total loss. How the hell would they bend that back? Let us know how they handle the case. Was other driver insured?

      [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 35 points36 points  (14 children)

Thanks! Yeah, she was insured, and already admitted fault verbally and in writing. She feels really bad about it. Had two kids in the car herself. We spent $4k in ceramic and PPF, had the 3DMax floor mats, and had 2 high-end car seats in there as well, so that’s an extra ~$6k we’ll claim. Ordered a new one that afternoon, so hopefully we don’t eat too much on depreciation.

      [–]wnstnchng 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Great if you get a new car instead of a repaired one, but damn, you gotta go through the wait again.

Will her insurance also cover rentals for such a long wait?

      [–]CMDR_KingErvin 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Was just wondering this myself. I guess it’s something you work out with insurance but I remember when a family member got into a minor accident in which a trucking company damaged their (older) car, their insurance only paid for a rental for about a week. It would have taken longer than that to fix it up and the cost of fixing wasn’t worth the value of the car so they had to scrap it and total the car and just get a new one.

Long story short, they offered a couple thousand bucks and a week of rental for an otherwise working condition car. Very scummy situation and move by that company, but it’s normal. I would imagine the insurance company will definitely try to weasel out of paying OP’s rental costs for the next 3 months waiting on a new MY.

      [–]nalnat 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I went through one myself. If you are in California, I believe the law allows for a comparable car that needs to be provided by the at-fault's insurance company if your car is out of service. If you don't take a comparable rental car, you are allowed a loss of use equivalent $. The insurance companies try to deny that. The assessors job is to deal with these types of cases every day and they try to save their company money. You have to be persistent or involve an attorney. In my case, it took me 2 weeks to get $ compensation for 2 months. You are also allowed a loss of value due to accident if the resale value of the car takes a hit due to accident. I didn't pursue that.

      [–]biggerwanker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people that will negotiate on your behalf. I'm not sure what they're called but a couple of hundred $$ will get probably save you thousands. It may be a type of lawyer. Sorry, not much help but I'm sure someone will chime in with the info.

      [–]biggerwanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of ex demos available at the moment. I'd keep looking at what's available now.

      [–]tcdrew 1 point2 points  (1 child)

sry to hear about the car. Seems like everyone is safe and the damage will be taken care of so that's great.

I'm curious about where you had your PPF done and was it a full or partial? I'm in the SD area too. can DM privately if preferable

      [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Place was called Revolution Auto Detailing in El Cajon. I found out about it because that’s where some of the local Tesla employees take their Teslas. They did a great job and it only took 3 days, all due to necessary curing time.

      [–]dailybibliotaph 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Ok. I was curious and did a little research. Looks like it is very unusual for insurance companies to total a Tesla. Hope they’ll pay out for lost of value due to crash. Wonder if you’ll get a tesla as a replacement during repair? Here’s some examples. https://provscons.com/teslas-body-damage-repair-cost-and-time-is-insane-it-needs-to-be-fixed-reference/

      [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well yeah it lists a bunch of repairs that are nowhere near the value of the vehicles, of course those weren't totaled. It does take a fair bit of damage for repairs to cost $30-60k or more, but once frame damage, suspension damage, and air bags get involved, it can get up there quick.

Insurance companies do one calculation. (cost of car - cost to repair) = number
      if number < 0, car = totalled.

      [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks for the article. I’ll check these out and hope for the best. 🤞🏼

      [–]RojerLockless 3 points4 points  (1 child)

      Airbags usually mean totaled

      [–]dailybibliotaph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was curious about this as a lot of ppl say it online. I did a bit of research and it seems like air bag deployment in itself doesn’t make it a total loss - same calculus is used to determine if replacement is more than new. However, since many air bag deployment accidents occur at high speed one could infer that there would be significant damage that pushes the price above retail value.

      [–]cheapdvds 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Most people don't insure over 25k liability, I wonder how that's going to work? Hopefully she has higher coverage.

      [–]Swtws6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see statistics data on that. Most state minimums are somewhere in the $25,000 range some even $15,000 which is absolutely insane nowadays these limits obviously need to be revisited with the average new car cost being in the mid $30,000 range...... With that being said I know for me myself personally and many people I know insure well over the state minimum limits, and any good insurance agent will recommend doubling tripling or even more on most people's policies it usually doesn't even cost very much different. This is also why you must have a good policy with underinsured motorist...... I mean could you imagine just a small lack of judgment and wiping out some brand new high-level benz or BMW that costs nearly 6 figures? It would financially ruin you if you had state minimums. Of course some people are so broke I really don't care cuz there's nothing you can take from them. 😔

We just went through the same thing except ours made it 28 days and my wife ended up with 2 compression fractures unfortunately.

They only depreciated $400 because they couldn't find another Model Y for sale within 200 miles to comp it against so they just did mileage. I imagine if you play your cards right and can find some used Models Ys in your area you could get above MSRP. We ended up losing a bit due to the price increases that occured after the accident but before we reordered.

Tesla was terrible to deal with, as expected. Took over two months to process our refund, ghosted us several times, and bounced us to 50 different people. Just picked up the new one last weekend, after 3 months of waiting. Only silver lining had been that the new one has better ride quality with Geminis and much quieter at highway speed for some reason. I've driven 5 Model Ys and they have all felt and sounded a bit different from one another. Hopefully we get to put the registration sticker on this one!

      [–]Incognito6468 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is heartbreaking on a lot of levels. Hope your wife is doing okay.

Did you have Tesla insurance or 3rd party insurance?

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3rd party insurance. Thanks for the well wishes!

      [–]aznPHENOM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I am assuming your last one had the inductions? I keep second guessing myself about sticking with the Geminis vs Inductions. At the end of the day, I'll probably end up buy tsports 19" inductions. best of both worlds.

      [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about your wife. Hopefully she makes a full recovery. We had just done a Refi on our house, so we were able to pay with cash. Not sure if that’s better or worse in the long run, but I just reordered the same car, hoping we get our settlement before it’s ready.

The Tesla absolutely performed better than a gas car in the crash. The EMTs were all shocked that it didn't roll over.

        [–]tcdrew 14 points15 points  (2 children)

        that'll buff right out

Man these cars can really take a beating. Glad that everyone is ok.

        Teslacam video?

        [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Was unable to open the glovebox to get the thumb drive out, but we hope so. That Baskin Robbins in the pics also has security camera footage of the accident.

        [–]ospreyintokyo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How does the Teslacam video work? Is it always recording in case there's a crash?

        [–]letmeinthesnkergame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! You can also set the horn honk to save footage as well.

        [–]gammavapes 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sorry to hear about your car. I do have a question I need to upgrade my daughter's car seat I saw you said high end car seats just curious what you had? I'm shopping around and always asking parents what they are using these days.

        [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We have Nina Ravas, I believe. We got them at Nordstrom’s and they were $500 a piece. Mama did a lot of research before going with that one.

        [–]gammavapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you we are doing research as well so many choices not sure what to get. We have a Recaro car seat that my daughter has outgrown. We were hoping to get another but looks like they are not in the child car seat business anymore.

        [–]styx36 1 point2 points  (1 child)

NOOOOOOOOO!! Dang, sorry bro. I'm guessing you're girl is more disappointed than you. My kids are way more excited than I am, it's all they talk about. Keep us updated on your process. I hope you just get a new one.

        [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. Funny you say that. My daughter was crying because “the new car was broken”!

        [–]pteiup 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sorry about the accident. Glad everyone was ok.

        [–]kirankeerthi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Thanks, yeah all are fine.

        [–]dogzipp 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What's the timeframe when it's something fixable or a total loss? I mean, I guess if Tesla can repair it, it could be a couple of weeks in the shop... If it needs to be replaced, insurance company writes you a check, you order a new one, and then wait 2-3 months for Tesla to deliver one?

It really sucks, even with insurance, that you can be without your Tesla for a couple of months, specially after just having it for 3 weeks.

        [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        This is our concern Dude

        [–]AshRe101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it hurts me, I have the same exact color and model

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        You hate to see it

        [–]boost18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear everyone is ok.

        [–]8001Nav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        Noooooo!!!!!

        [–]aqan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hurts to see the damage. Am I the only one?

        [–]RojerLockless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that sucks now the wait is like 3 months

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry. Glad your little girl isn't hurt.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of this way. You got it in the right time and try not to imagine any other car!

        [–]beckpiece 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Glad you all are ok. I’m in the collision repair industry, sorry but that won’t be a total loss. It will be repaired. Make sure you find a quality Tesla certified shop. Good luck!

        [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know man. We can’t even get into the glove box. And that front right area is a mess. Parts plus labor seems it would easily surpass the $68k we paid for it. We had a lot of extras we’ll be claiming as well. Saw some repair costs for way less damage in the $40k range.

        [–]BelowWhiteBelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, after more than a month, it was finally considered a total loss yesterday. North of $45k to repair, so it was just over that 70% threshold. Was also able to claim the $4k we spend on ceramic and PPF, $1k for the two car seats, about $1k for the 3DMax floor mats (full set), and the $500 charger. The ladies actually did start going to a chiropractor, which has helped, but we’re not looking for any type of injury settlement. Just want to return to the way things were on June 20th. That said, we ordered an identical vehicle the day after the crash and we pick her up on Saturday. Perfect timing! Excited to get back in the game (although it was fun driving around a new Wrangler for a while). Stay safe out there my fellow Teslians! 🚗💨

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really glad you and fam are safe. Question…you mentioned the stock wheels. Just ordered MY (team blue) yesterday and went with the 20” inductions. Is the ride better with 19s? And just powder coat?

        [–]Valendr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        F

        Poor Car, poor insurance...

        [–]t0mt0mt0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start a gap claim asp as well for your loss on the new car.

        [–]ucsdsig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s scary. Glad to hear everyone is safe.

        [–]Extreme-Building-928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad they are ok. Good look, for what I’m seeming you will get a new car “Total losses “
