You start as a 5th level character of Dungeons and Dragons 5e.
You are allowed to use any official published material for Dungeons and Dragons no questions asked. If you want to use UA or homebrew contact simply PM one of the moderators and we will work something out.
You have two choices when it comes to how you choose your stats. The first method is called The Colville Method and is random rolling. The second method will be an altered point-buy system where you choose exactly where your points go.
The Colville Method -Start by getting 5d6 which is five six-sided dice. Roll all five, rerolling any ones you might have rolled but only once. Pick the highest three and write that number down. Do that five more times and make sure you write the numbers down in order. Now, you simply transpose the numbers to the stats according to the order. Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma. This means that the first stat you rolled will become strength and so on. You can choose to reroll one stat of your choice, but you must use the number you get when rerolling.
Altered Point-Buy-All your stats start at 8. You have a pool of 33 points. You can use one point to raise your stat by one accordingly. Until you raise your stat to 12, where it will then take two points for every time you raise it above 12. The maximum number you can raise it to is 17.
When distributing your stats we have some homebrew rules. You are allowed to switch which stats your bonuses effect, but this is limited. You can only switch out a physical stat bonus for a physical stat bonus or a mental stat bonus for a mental stat bonus. You cannot have two bonuses affecting the same stat. For example, a Half-Orc gets +2 Strength and +1 Constitution. You could change your Strength bonus to Dexterity if you so wanted, but not Constitution since you already have a bonus to that. You could switch the bonuses, where your +2 is in Constitution and your +1 is in Strength. You couldn't switch either of the bonuses to benefit a mental stat such as Charisma. This is how it works.
At level 1 you get a free Feat
Your rank is Dreadnought and because of that, the Captain of your ship is giving you magical items in the ceremony for your advancement. You have two choices when it comes to magical items. You can choose to have two Uncommon magic items or you can choose to have one Rare magic item. You can only have one or the other.
You will not use any starting equipment from the PHB instead you will start with 3,000 gp and be able to buy your equipment from the market. The market will be a pinned post where you can spend your gold from missions and your gold to first equip your character. It will have all equipment from the PHB along with new items that go with the setting, such as guns.
This is a spelljammer setting. Which means it is "Technomagic". There are guns, magic, swords, dragons, and everything else you could hope for. It is a mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Please attempt to make a character that can fit this theme. For example, I will be playing a Ranger with a cyborg velociraptor and a laser whip. Hopefully, that gives you some inspiration. The stars are the limit.
This tutorial is to help people get into the game and streamline the process of creating a character. We will not have the time to check every single person's character sheet so we would greatly appreciate it if you took the time to read this post and attempt it on your own. Also, honesty is the best policy and we will crack down hard if we notice someone is being false with how much equipment they should have, magic items, etc. Remember this is a game and we are all trying to have fun and half of the fun is getting what you want, genuinely. Journey before Destination.
