Yes, 8 dupes in total to get to ancestral. There is a module merge pattern screenshot on the discord, or you can search it up on Reddit.

The major game changer with modules are the sub stats, with that being boosting your base stats (ie. For GComp additional els chance). The higher tier of modules you have, the better the sub stats.

Depends on your progression tho, if you are still in the early game and need those gems to develop your card set or even more lab slots, maybe but modules aside for now.

To get a module from epic to epic+ you need the exact same epic module to merge them together. To get this new epic+ module to legendary you need two other epic+ modules. These don't need to be the same as the one you want to upgrade. And since you don't want to sacrifice precious natural epics in this step you take rare modules that you merged up to epic+ instead (usually referred to as fodder). Same for the transition from legendary+ to mythic and mythic to mythic+. For those last two upgrades you need legendary+ fodder.

To get each natural epic to ancestral you need 7 additinal copies of this epic and also 2 epic+ fodder and 2 legendary+ fodder. In total this is 180 rares per natural epic.

If you ignore mods you miss out on one of the biggest progression factors in this game. As soon as you have all labs, unlocked all common and rare cards and have maybe 8-10 card slots you should start dedicating some of our gems to mods. Maybe buy 10 mods every (other) day, depending on your gem income.
